The MRI machine service of Narayani Hospital, which has been suspended for the past 5 months, has been operational since Sunday. The service of the MRI machine, which was purchased for 300 million rupees, was disrupted less than 6 months after its operation. As the supplier company did not receive the remaining 20 percent payment, the MRI machine was experiencing problems due to not updating the software.

Due to non-availability of MRI in government hospitals, patients from poor and underprivileged families are forced to undergo MRI in private hospitals by paying expensive fees. For an MRI at Narayani Hospital, which costs Rs 8,000, private individuals charge almost double the price.

According to Dr. Enamul Haque, acting medical superintendent of the hospital, the software of the MRI machine was updated only two days ago after the remaining payment was made to the supplier company. "After the supplier company paid the 5 percent tax to the government for the purchase and delivery of the machine, we also paid the remaining 20 percent," said Dr. Mesu. Haque said, "After that, the company updated the software. Then the machine was tested on Friday. The service has been resumed since Sunday.'

According to the radiology department, 8 to 10 patients were getting MRI's daily when the MRI was normal. The hospital administration said that the 20 percent amount could not be paid due to the increase in the dollar rate. Insufficient amount was demanded from the ministry.

On October 13, the then Minister of Health and Population of the Government of Nepal, Mohan Bahadur Basnet, inaugurated the MRI room. After internal testing and special training by expert teams, the MRI machine was put into operation from the second week of last October, after 8 months of being brought in. Even before the connection, the MRI machine costing 300 crores was stored under the open sky for about 2 and a half months in the hospital premises. At that time, Lumbini Health Care Pvt Ltd, the supplier of the machine, delayed the installation of the machine due to lack of helium gas used in the machine. Even after installation, the machine was not operational for 6 months due to lack of generator and technical reasons in the hospital.

It was reported that the service started in the hospital with 72 channel, 3 Tesla MRI machine, which is considered to be the best and most up-to-date in Nepal. After this service was started in the government hospital, the patients of Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi including Parsa benefited from MRI, which is considered a very special imaging technique.
