A group is on a fast to death in Janakpur, demanding the construction of a bridge over the Kamala River on the border of Sirha and Dhanusha under the Hulaki Highway.

People's representatives, local intellectuals and leaders of Siraha have been protesting in front of the office of Chief Minister and Council of Ministers in Janakpur since last Tuesday, demanding a bridge.

In support of the ongoing hunger strike in Janakpur, a demonstration is being held on the highway in Siraha. Local youth have been protesting at the headquarters since Wednesday.

Protesters who burnt effigies of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh on Wednesday evening have been protesting since early morning and shouting slogans.

They call it the Warpar Struggle for the Kamala Bridge. 'There were dozens of protests for this bridge in the past,' said Sunil Yadav, a local, 'but this time we are in a cross-border battle with the state's rabies.'

Praveen Yadav, coordinator of Sangharsh Samiti, says that this year's movement will not stop until the construction of the bridge is ensured. They are demanding that a new bridge should be built saying that the bridge built on the Kamala river is not operational due to wrong design and poor work.

He said that the protestors who are on hunger strike are also getting sick. Coordinator Yadav informed that some of them are now climbing the slope.

However, Chief Minister Singh said that although he was worried about Kamala Bridge, he was saddened by the agitation. 'I myself am worried about this bridge,' he told Kantipur, 'initiatives are being made for it.'

He has informed that the Federal Government is in charge of the construction of Kamala Bridge and for this he has already sent a letter to the Federal Physical Infrastructure and the Prime Minister's Office.

On June 27, the Sangharsh Committee submitted a memorandum to Madhesh Chief Minister Singh giving an ultimatum. In the memorandum, the Sangharsh Committee warned that if the demand is not implemented within seven days, they will fast to death in front of the Chief Minister's Office.

The foundation stone of the bridge that was swept away by floods in the Kamala River was laid in November 2068. Although there was an agreement that the construction would be completed in three years, the construction was not completed after 10 years.
