Khotang Prison has more prisoners than its capacity

According to Jailer Som Prasad Acharya, there are 162 inmates including 159 men and 3 women. Most of these are prisoners of extortion cases. Acharya said that 53 men in the rape case are serving prison terms.

There are 7 people in the case related to forced labor and 15 people in the case of forced labor are serving imprisonment. 36 men in the duty killing case, 8 men in the citizenship case, 1 woman and 3 men in the banking crime case and 1 woman and 5 men in the vehicular death case are serving jail time.

There are 3 men in the drug heroin and ganja case, 3 in the khunada case, and 5 men in the indecent behavior in public place case. Acharya said that 21 prisoners are serving their lives in prison for cases such as human trafficking, fraud, theft of arms and ammunition, arson, and theft.

Acharya said that the number of prisoners in the jail has increased after the police launched an operation to arrest absconding defendants in the recent period. In the financial year 2080/81, 124 fugitive defendants who were convicted in various cases were arrested. In the current fiscal year, 13 men and 2 women from the list of fugitives convicted by the court have been arrested. Besides, 36 people including 35 men and 1 woman have been arrested in various cases in the current financial year and they are fugitives, Deputy Superintendent of Police Purushottam Khadka said.

According to Acharya, eating, living and sleeping are also a problem because there are more prisoners than the capacity. Acharya said, "Since there are more prisoners than the capacity of the prison, there is a problem of eating, living, and sleeping.
