Senior Justice Prakashman Singh Raut has been recommended as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Constitutional Council's meeting on Monday recommended Raut as the Chief Justice. Narayan Dahal, member of the council and president of the National Assembly, informed that there was a unanimous decision on Raut's name.

Earlier, the Council meeting held last Friday to recommend the Chief Justice could not reach a decision. Monday's meeting is a continuation of the previous meeting. In the meeting, the Chairman of the Council, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, presented the agenda regarding the appointment of the Chief Justice.

The Judicial Council recommended the names of 8 judges for the post of Chief Justice. Among them, the senior-most judge Raut was recommended by the Constitutional Council. Chief Justice Vishwambhar Prasad Shrestha is retiring from October 19 due to his age limit of 65 years. Article 284(3) of the Constitution stipulates that the Council must recommend the appointment of the Chief Justice or any head or officer of a constitutional body one month before the vacancy occurs.

Raut, who was recommended for the position of Chief Justice, was appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court on July 17, 2071. Born in Udaipur, Raut was the president of Nepal Bar Association in 2063.

The President will appoint Raut as the Chief Justice after approval by the Parliamentary Hearings Committee. After being appointed as Chief Justice, Raut will head the Supreme Court for 13 months.
