  • At the foothills of 4320 meters above sea level, Dr. Dr. Sanduk Ruit looked as excited as he was, after being able to see the eyes, the patients were as happy as some were dancing and others were Dr. He was exchanging pleasantries with Ruit

A temporary roof covered with black plastic over a white tent. On the left is the She-Gumba, about 804 years old. Below it is the She-Khola and in front the Crystal Himalayas. Senior ophthalmic surgeon Dr. Dr. Dr. Sanduk Ruit was undergoing cataract surgery.

Dr. who has done thousands of eye camps. It was the first time Ruitt's team performed cataract surgery at such a high altitude.

On the occasion of the 12-year She-Dugdra Festival, Tilganga Eye Institute conducted an eye camp from August 16 to 18 in collaboration with She-Phoksundo Rural Municipality, Dolpobuddha Rural Municipality and Chharkatongsong Rural Municipality. 61 people underwent cataract surgery in the camp. A few weeks before the start of the camp, the eye hospital team reached all the municipalities of Dolpa district and conducted a screening program to find out the problem of cataracts. While screening a total of 2375 people including 1292 women and 1083 men, 61 cataract patients who could be operated on in the eye camp were found.

The team of Tilganga Eye Foundation had walked for 6 days from Dunai to She-Gumba to conduct an eye camp in She-Dugdra Mela. Carrying most of the materials needed for the camp, the team descended to Gumba after passing Kangla at an altitude of 5400 meters through the Bhir road above She-Foksundo. Dr. Ruit was taken to the monastery by helicopter from Dunai via Phoksundo. Dr. Dr. Dr. Ruit's arrival/non-arrival was in doubt. After the rain suddenly stopped for a few hours and the sky rose, the helicopter he was riding in was able to land on the helipad built on the banks of She-Khola.

The first day camp started late amid many difficulties. After the generator taken from Kathmandu failed to reach that height, one day another generator had to be fetched from Saldang, a distance away on foot. Along with that, the technical team had to work hard to make the surgery room operable using the solar panels installed in the monastery.

After all the preparations are over, Dr. It was 2 o'clock in the afternoon on the first day when Ruitt and his assistant began the operation, scrubbing with cold water and soapy water. By 5pm, 27 people had been operated on. On the second day, the operation started at 11 am. 32 people were operated on that day and only 2 people were operated on the last day of the camp. Three of those who were operated on in the camp had both eyes operated on at the same time. Others had surgery on only one eye.

Dhargyal, 79, from Namdo, a few hours away from the monastery, is one of those who underwent both eye surgeries. He had lost his sight for 2 years. The screening team found that he was completely covered in cataracts and could not even go indoors alone. He was saying that he lost hope of seeing again in his old age. His son brought him to the fairground for surgery. Similarly, 74-year-old Chiring Paljom also underwent cataract surgery covering both eyes. She also came from Namdo holding her granddaughter's hand.

56-year-old Jompa from Thiling in Dolpa was blind for almost 3 years. He had no idea what to do when his eyes suddenly began to lose sight. During an eye examination, it was discovered that he had cataracts in both eyes. She came from Tiling, a day's journey from She-gumba, on a horse led by her son. Other old men and adults like Dhargyal, Chhiring and Jompa had traveled from their villages for 5-6 days on foot and on horseback to reach the fair site She-Gumba in the hope of regaining their eyesight.

dr. When Ruit opened the blindfold of the patient who had been operated on the day before, the foot of the crystal mountain was raining along with the rain. Dr. Adding laughter to the joy of the patient, Ruit sometimes asked him to hold his nose and sometimes his ear. As he spoke without the patients even noticing, the quiet monastery complex echoed with laughter.

Dr. Ruit's face glowed distinctly after the surgery, with not a single patient experiencing any complications. He was proudly telling his fellow doctors that the operation was better than any surgery done in any big hospital in the world. Be that as it may, the eyes of all the patients had a distinct glow. Some showed their respect by singing, some by dancing, some by knocking their heads with Dr. Ruit's head.
