Ashok Sigdel, the permanent Chief of Staff of the Nepalese Army, has been appointed as the Chief of Staff. He has been appointed as the Chief of Army Staff with effect from August 24.

President Ramchandra Paudel has decided to implement from August 24 on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers of the Government of Nepal in accordance with clause (5) of Article 267 of the Constitution of Nepal.

According to the statement issued by the spokesperson of the President's Office, Shailaja Regmi Bhattarai, President Poudel appointed Sigdel as the Chief of Army Staff on Wednesday.

Since July 24th, the current Chief of Army Staff Prabhuram Sharma has been on a month's leave to take regular retirement. Now on August 24, according to the tradition of the Nepali Army, Sharma will hand over the responsibility to Sigdel . Sigdel will now remain the Chief of Staff until August 24, 2084.

Sigdel, who has been serving in the Nepali Army for about 38 years, has received higher education and military training from home and abroad. He has completed post graduation from Army Command and Staff College, Shivpuri and National Defense University of China, Higher Command and Management Course from Nepal Army War College and Defense Management Course from India.

According to the army, Sigdel has also commanded Padik Pritna, Bahini and Gana as well as the commandant of counter-insurgency and jungle warfare school. He has also served as the Departmental Head of War Operations Department and Directorate General of Order, Policy and Planning as well as Military Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief.

Apart from participating in international seminars, trainings and meetings, Sigdel has experience working as a United Nations peacekeeper in the former Yugoslavia, Tajikistan and Liberia. In addition, he has been awarded with various national and international medals and honors, including Supraval Janasevashree 3rd.

Sigdel was accused of tampering with citizenship and educational documents when he was promoted to Rathi. But the then government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal promoted Sigdel to Rathi saying that there were no errors in his citizenship and educational certificates. After that, the way is open for him to become the Commander-in-Chief.
