The Supreme Court has given an interim order not to immediately implement the government's decision to make national identity cards mandatory for obtaining public service facilities.

The joint bench of Justices Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma and Til Prasad Shrestha gave an interim order not to implement the decision of the Ministry of Home Affairs on June 10th. The

order says, 'Part 5 point no. (a) The word 'substitute' mentioned in the provisions of 'submitting national identity card or national identity number in lieu of citizenship certificate' published in (a) and not making national identity card mandatory for the purpose of providing public service facilities provided by the Government of Nepal.

Even though the court has instructed all the local levels that the national identity card is not mandatory for now, it is seen that the national identity card is only for the purpose of social security allowance and that too is not mandatory for some time. The

order states, "If the arrangement mentioned in the Nepal Gazette remains in place, the general citizen should be deprived of receiving essential facilities such as public services provided by the Nepal government on the basis that they have a certificate of Nepali citizenship even if they do not have a national identity card, then the decision should not be implemented until the final decision of the submitted application is made."

Advocate Ram Bahadur Raut also filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against the government's decision.
