9N-AME call sign aircraft of Sourya Airlines flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara for detailed inspection and maintenance (C-Check) crashed in the Tribhuvan International Airport premises at 11:11 am on Wednesday. 18 people died in the accident, including the co-pilot, out of which 17 are Nepalese and one is Yemeni. Pilot Manishratna Shakya is injured.


According to the police, the co-pilot Sushant Katuwal along with Amitman Maharjan, Sagar Acharya, Dilip Burma, Manuraj Sharma, Ashwin Niroula, Sudeepal Joshi, Sarvesh Marasini, Shyam Vindukar, Navraj Ale, Rajaram Acharya, Preeja Khatiwada, Adhiraj Sharma, Uddhav Puri, Yajnaprasad Paudel, Santosh Mahato, Punyaratna Shahi and Yemeni national Arif Reda have died. Police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki informed that Captain Shakya is being treated at Kathmandu Medical College Sinamangal. There were 19 people on board, including two crew members.

Airport Deputy Director General Premnath Thakur informed that the plane crashed while flying towards the sky after leaving the runway. A few minutes after taking off from Koteshwar, the plane turned right and crashed on the east side of the runway. Eyewitnesses said that after that black smoke came out and then a fire broke out. The Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Fire Brigade, Nepal Civil Aviation Authority joined forces to control the fire on the ship. It took about half an hour to bring the fire under control. The bodies were collected after 40 minutes. Pilot Shakya was rescued at 11:34.

The employees of Sourya Airlines and their relatives were killed in the plane crash. According to Jasoda Subedi, Spokesperson of Pokhara Regional International Airport Office, the airline had obtained permission to keep the aircraft in the hangar there for detailed testing and maintenance. Solar Airlines does not operate regular flights on the Kathmandu-Pokhara route. An employee of the Civil Aviation Authority said that while the ship was going for testing and maintenance, other employees of the company and their relatives may have gone to Pokhara.

Flight and landing at Tribhuvan airport was disrupted for about an hour due to the plane crash. At that time, domestic and international flights taking off and landing from the airport were affected. Some of the planes that had scheduled landings were 'held'. Flights from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Dhaka in Bangladesh were 'diverted' there. After 12:30 in the afternoon, the airport was in regular operation.

After the plane crash, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar, Tourism Minister Badri Pandey, Inspector General of Nepal Police Basant Bahadur Kunwar and Inspector General of Armed Police Raju Aryal reached the airport. After understanding the situation at the accident site, Prime Minister Oli took a 'briefing' at the rescue coordination center of the Civil Aviation Authority at Tribhuvan International Airport. He said the incident was very tragic and unimaginable. It is stated in the statement issued by the Prime Minister's Secretariat that Oli expressed his condolences to the deceased and expressed his condolences to the families. Prime Minister Oli has also wished for the recovery of the injured Captain Shakya. The government has formed a five-member inquiry commission to investigate the plane crash. The Cabinet meeting held in the evening at Singh Darbar decided to form an inquiry committee under the coordination of former Director General of Nepal Civil Aviation Authority Ratish Chandralal Suman. The committee consists of Captain Dipu Jwarchan of Nepal Airlines, Engineer Sanjay Adhikari of Shree Airlines, Associate Professor of Pulchok Engineering Campus Sudeep Bhattarai and Technical Officer of Ministry of Tourism Mukesh Dangol. The committee has been given time to submit the report within 45 days. Information and Communication Minister and Government Spokesperson Prithvisubba Gurung said that it was decided to fly the national flag at half-mast on Thursday for mourning.

"It has been decided to arrange for the domestic airline company to conduct a mandatory technical test of the ship and to monitor it by the Civil Aviation Authority in order to prevent accidents in the coming days," he said.
