Highlights

  • 88 votes of Congress, 78 votes of UML, 7 votes of JSP and 4 votes of LOSPA in the government
  • Prime Minister Oli is likely to get 194 votes by adding 6 votes from outside the government, 5 from Jaspa Nepal, 4 from Civil Immunity and 2 from Independent.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will take the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives meeting on Sunday. Mahesh Bertaula, chief whip of UML, informed that although there is a provision to take a vote of confidence within 30 days, the Prime Minister has a plan to propose a vote of confidence in the Parliament meeting on Sunday.

On Sunday, Oli became the Prime Minister for the fourth time in accordance with Article 76(2) of the Constitution, replacing the government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, which was supported by his own party. Under Article 76(2) of the Constitution, there is a constitutional provision that a vote of confidence must be taken by the Prime Minister appointed under Article 4 of the same Article within 30 days. On the same day as the Prime Minister, Oli has completed the Cabinet. In addition to Congress and UML, JSP and LOSPA also participate in the Council of Ministers.

Even though they are not participating in the government, Janmat, Jaspa Nepal and Civil Immunity have also given a vote of confidence to the government. Although Congress and UML wanted to bring them into the government, at the last moment those parties were out of power. Jaspa, which was formed under the leadership of Ashok Rai after splitting from itself, got two ministries, but Jaspa, led by Upendra Yadav, did not want to participate in the government of Nepal.

An official of the Congress said that even though Jaspa Nepal wanted to give a ministry, it did not come to the government. Spokesperson of Jaspa Nepal, Manish Suman, said that even if he does not join the government, he will support Prime Minister Oli's proposal of trust. He said that since the Congress and UML have set the agenda for stable government and constitutional amendment, they want to support it. "Since the promulgation of the constitution, our agenda for amending the constitution, including citizenship, language, and constituencies, has remained the same. Since the government has put forward the agenda of constitutional amendment, we are hopeful that our issue will also be addressed," he said. "The parliamentary party will make the decision formally. But our party is in favor of giving a vote of confidence to the government.

Leader of Civil Liberties Party Ranjita Shrestha also said that she will give a vote of confidence to the government. "We have given a vote of confidence to all previous governments, there was no question of not giving it to Prime Minister Oli," she said.

Congress and UML have decided to continue the government led by Janmat Party in Madhesh province. With the support of Congress-UML, Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh has received the vote of confidence. Congress and UML have supported the Madhesh-Pradesh government and said that the party will give a vote of confidence to the Prime Minister in the federal government.

In the government led by Oli, there are 177 MPs including 88 from Congress, 78 from UML, 7 from Jaspa and 4 from LOSPA. Apart from that, it is seen that Prime Minister Oli will get the support of more than two-thirds, i.e. 192 MPs, including 6 from the public opinion, 5 from Jaspa Nepal and 4 from Civil Immunity. Independent MPs Amresh Kumar Singh and Yogendra Mandal have also promised to support the government. Even in the government formed after the 2074 election, Oli became the prime minister with two-thirds support. Oli, who lost the Prime Minister due to the internal conflict within the then CPN, got the chance to become the Prime Minister again after three years.
