  • Engineer Sagar Karki saw that the soil and sand were absorbed by using the machine in the hole.

When people hear about the landslide on the Narayangadh-Muglin road, many people think that it fell from the soil that was cut during the widening of the road. On Friday morning, after two buses fell off the road in Simaltal, Bharatpur Metropolitan Municipality-29, after falling off the road, many people thought that the mountain cut during the road widening fell on the vehicle.

But the landslide that caused the disappearance of two buses with 65 passengers did not come from the side of the road. At the scene of the incident, the grass and plants on the road side wall are intact . How did that landslide happen to wash away two buses?

Engineer Sagar Karki of Bharatpur Division Road Office went out to find the root of the landslide that overturned the bus the day after the accident. Simaltal is about 23 km from Narayangadh Bazar to the northeast towards Muglin.

While going from Narayangadh, there is a small turn before reaching Simaltal. Where there are also teahouses on the banks of the Trishuli River. After the mode comes Kadam Khola . This river is not that big, it is a small river.

There is a small mound attached to Kadamkhola . On the other side of that mound is another hole named Sinduregaira . Two buses were involved in an accident on Friday morning in this hole, which is about 200 meters away from Simaltal.

Two buses and their passengers have gone missing after falling from the 'culvert' of Sinduregaira and reaching the Trishuli river which is one hundred meters below . How did Sinduregaira have the power to cause such an accident? If only water flowed in Sinduregaira, this accident would not have happened. Sand, mud and stones flowed in the flowing river .

Simaltal is the place where the residents of Dondrangbesi village, Tanahun Ambukhairhani rural municipality-5 of Trishulipari come to do their daily shopping. The suspension bridge of Trishuli river to go to Simaltal is in front of Sinduregaira . That's why Jung Bahadur Magar of Dondrangbesi, while walking, saw that only water was always flowing in Sinduregaira during the rainy season. Ledo had not seen .

Engineer Sagar Karki prepared a Google map of the source of landslides and landslides.

Bharatpur Division Road Information Officer Chandeshwar Sah said that the road was blocked by a landslide in Sinduregaira on Friday night. In the river where only water flows, Ledo blocked the mouth of the culvert and flowed over the road and blocked the road. The accident happened shortly after driving the vehicle after clearing the landslide,' he said. In the same place, on June 8th, the road was blocked and the road was frozen.

Engineer Sagar Karki, who has been maintaining the Narayangadh-Muglin road regularly for three years, went uphill on Saturday to understand the reason for such a big accident. After using the machine in the hole, he saw that the soil and sand were absorbed.

``Usually we look at the side of the road and see how risky the road deal is . If it is found to be weak, we look more into the right of way of the road in terms of building a wall and doing bioengineering to prevent landslides. But I didn't think there was any risk in Simaltal. It was known that water was coming in the hole," said Engineer Karki. He saw the spring of Ledo in Sinduregaira about 900 meters from the road .

'Above Dumrevanne village, a 650 meter road with 6 turns was dug from the upper village to the lower village . From above, water was found to be flowing in the second turn of that road . The soil there is not sure . The ground itself is cracked," said Engineer Karki.

He said that the road was dug where the land was not secure, no foundation was built for protection, and the road was made by digging the sensitive land and making the road. This is how it worked. It is said that more than 100 ml of rain fell on Friday. When it rained heavily, it started to form a lake and started falling down," Karki said. Before, only water flowed in the kholsa, now it has flowed.' Under its guise, the old road that has been dug up is also visible. Photo: Ramesh Kumar Paudel-Kantipur.

Ward President of Bharatpur-29 Surya Bahadur Gurung says that a road was dug last January at a cost of five lakh rupees to connect upper and lower Dumre villages. Engineer Karki says that this road is the source of the landslide. Ward president Gurung says that there should be a true study about the cause of Simaltal's landslide.

To say that the landslide came from the place where the road was dug above, there is a village in the middle, that village would have been destroyed. When digging the road, I have reminded you that where there is danger, do not drive the weak place and accordingly, they have taken the road by hiding the dangerous place . The mud may have fallen, the landslide that washed away the car did not come," said Ward President Gurung.

The search for missing persons will be conducted across the border. Out of 65 passengers in two buses, only three are safe.

So far, 17 bodies including two women have been found, and 10 of them have been confirmed as passengers of the bus. But there is a doubt in the identity of one person.

The Chief District Officer of Chitwan, Indradev Yadav, said that due to the high flow of the river on the day of the incident last Friday, the dead bodies may have crossed the dam of the Gandak Canal and reached the Indian territory.

Prazia Yadav said that the bodies were found in Gairy of Gaindakot, 58 km away and Triveni, 103 km away from the incident site. Among the missing passengers in the bus are nine Indian citizens. The bodies of three Indians have been found. Yadav says that cooperation and coordination with the authorities of East and West Nawalparasi is also underway in search and rescue. 500 security personnel have been deployed in the search along with army and armed divers, water drone (sonar) and police.

Since Monday, the 'Sonar Camera', which indicates objects up to 300 meters below the water, is being used . "The sonar camera that was used earlier used to indicate whether there is an object in the water or not." This sonar shows the size and shape of the object," said SP Janak Puri, Co-Director of Disaster Management Training School at Kurintar, Chitwan, Armed Police. But even till Tuesday evening, Sonar has not given any indication about the missing bus. A team of security personnel is searching for Golaghat, 50 km away from the incident site, by placing a screen on the motorboat itself. Sai Rameshwahadur Thapa of Sashrat said that the water is very cloudy and the flow is high and the problem is happening.

It is believed that it is not suitable for diving in a bag of more than two knots . Two knots means the water velocity is four kilometers per hour . But we have also entered the river with a speed of 20 to 30 km per hour," said Thapa.

On Friday morning, Ganpati Transport bus No. 03-001 B 2495 coming from Kathmandu to Gaur and Bagmati Bus No. 03-006 B 1516 going to Kathmandu from Birganj went missing in a landslide in Simaltal, 22 km northeast of Narayangadh. Out of the 65 passengers of both buses, the bus reached the river, but three passengers of the Ganapati Transport bus came up by swimming. All others went with the bus .
