Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel has said that the government will work to increase the morale of energy producers. In a meeting with the officials of Independent Energy Producers Association, Nepal (IPPAN) at the Ministry of Finance on Sunday, he said that energy producers should be encouraged as the country has not yet reached the state where electricity has been reached.

Finance Minister Paudel mentioned that Nepal is currently importing and exporting electricity and expressed commitment to increase the morale of energy producers in the private sector as more electricity is needed to increase per capita electricity consumption. During the

meeting, IPPAN President Ganesh Karki said that the contribution of the private sector in Nepal's energy sector has been significant. He said that 182 projects equal to 2500 megawatts have been completed and 137 projects equal to 3900 megawatts are under construction. 136 projects equal to 3900 megawatts are waiting for financial management through Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Nepal Electricity Authority.

Karki also said that 80 percent of the 10,700 megawatt projects that have been applied to the Power Development Department for construction and 10,000 megawatt projects that have applied to the authority for PPA with construction permits are proceeding under the leadership of the private sector. While the private sector is moving aggressively in the energy development of Nepal, the financial policy announced by the Government of Nepal last May and the monetary policy announced by the Nepal Rastra Bank last Friday did not encourage the entire private sector involved in energy development. Mohan Kumar Dangi requested Finance Minister Poudel.

President Ganesh Karki, Senior Vice President Mohan Kumar Dangi, Vice President Anand Chaudhary and Uttam Vlon, Deputy Secretary General Prakash Dulal and Working Committee members Uttar Kumar Shrestha and Bharat Parajuli participated in the meeting.

Electricity Act 2049 states that import of goods/equipment for the maintenance of energy projects will be charged only one percent customs duty and it is also mentioned in the budget up to the financial year 2079/80 as this provision has been removed from the previous financial year, so only one percent customs duty will be charged in the Electricity Act. Ipan demanded that the system be maintained.

likewise IPAN also put forward a demand that energy projects with a capital of more than two billion should be listed in the foreign securities market by providing approval for the issuance of shares and rights shares of the projects approved by the Electricity Regulatory Commission.
