It has been 6 years since Narayangadh-Butwal road expansion started. Its physical progress has barely reached 53 percent. While the construction speed is slow, the deadline has been extended by one year. The deadline was extended a few days ago for the third time till 8 July 2082.
The contract for the extension of 113 km was awarded on 075 Chait 8 . According to the initial contract, the construction work should be completed by July 22, 2019. After the work was not completed in that period, the deadline was extended for the second time till July 8, 2018. After the work was not completed in that period, the deadline was extended by one more year. The contract for road expansion was taken by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. Due to the company's delay, the work could not be accelerated.
The decision to extend the deadline was made to speed up the work, said Chudaraj Dhakal, project head of the Directorate of Projects (ADB). "There was a lot of discussion about whether or not to extend the deadline, we went into the process of breaking the contract without extending the deadline, but it was seen that it would take time to make a new contract and the cost would increase," he said. According to him, only 26.5 km of the road has been paved.
Road upgrading has been started with the loan support of Asian Development Bank (ADB). By dividing it into two parts, the contract amount is 16 billion 99 million 52 lakh 96 thousand rupees. Even the allocated budget for the
project has not been spent. Only 46.98 percent of the allocation of 7 billion 44 crore 92 lakhs was spent for this project last year. That is, 3 billion 49 million 92 million rupees have been spent.
Due to the delay in road expansion, daily commuters are bound to suffer . The risk of accidents has also increased due to potholes everywhere on the expanded road. The problem of vehicles slipping due to slippery soil has been added to the downhill section .
