  • There was no effort to prevent the landslides that started with the digging of the road or to find an alternative

The Beni-Darbang-Muna road is the road that connects Mangla, Malika and Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality of Myagdi to West Burtibang and Dhorpatan of Baglung. 10 km west of Beni, the headquarter of this road, the traffic has been blocked for 8 days due to landslides in the turning point of Tatopani-Babiachour section. Landslides have been continuously falling at the same place for 25 years in the rotation.

Efforts to prevent the landslides that started with road digging or to find alternatives have not yet been made. Engineer Arjun Sharma, Information Officer of Infrastructure Office, Myagdi, said that since the landslides are continuously falling due to rain, there is no possibility to bring the traffic into operation for some time. He said that there is no accounting for this landslide prevention or alternative.

We are the district body that looks after this road. So far, there is no study to prevent this landslide. If there is an 18-20 meter long trust bridge on the Myagdi river, an alternative route will be prepared. The stakeholders of the district are not interested in that,' Sharma said.

The then District Development Committee started digging the Beni-Darbang 24 km road by collecting 20 lakhs from November 2016 and 1-1 lakhs from the 20 villages of Sawik in the western part. In the first year, a 10 km road was built up to Faparkhet. When the Beni-Darbang road began to be dug, the motor had not arrived in the capital Beni. Navaraj Sharma, who was the chairman of Jiwis Myagdi at the time, said that the problem is now that the landslide is spreading and now it is necessary to use an alternative route.

The rolling landslide, which is discussed as the lifeline of the western part of the district, is located on the border of Faparkhet of Beni Municipality-4 Tatopani and Mangla Rural Municipality-2 Simalchaur. The landslide area, which is about 150 meters wide, is steep and full of gegran.

Now from Beni, passing through Faparkhet, crossing the concrete bridge over the Myagdi River and reaching Mangala Rural Municipality-4 Pakherbasti. Passengers have to get off at Pakher, walk about 500 meters, cross the Myagdi river and take another vehicle from Simalchaur. If another motor bridge is constructed over the Myagdi river between Pakher and Simalchaur, an alternative road to Bhir will be prepared for an additional distance of about 500 meters.

'Millions of money have flown in the landslide of Ghumoone' so far. Now is the time to find an alternative to this landslide. We have started initiatives and efforts. We have also managed land for alternative roads. We have suffered and abused when the budget is given only to those who have access,'' Mangla Rural Municipality Chairman Satprasad Roka said, "The office that promotes accounting is also the same, no matter how much we say, they don't listen, they don't care. Sleeping in winter, screaming when it rains.'
