Associate Professor Pasang Sherpa has been appointed as the Head of the Central Department of Sociology of Tribhuvan University.
On Sunday, the Executive Council of the Tertiary University appointed Dr. Sherpa as the head of the Central Department of Linguistics and Sherpa in Sociology. It has been decided to appoint Karunakhar Khatiwada.
Although there is a controversy in the University regarding the appointment of the Departmental Head of the Department of Sociology, Sherpa has been appointed on the basis of seniority, according to the Executive Council. The office of the department head will be for 4 years. Yuvraj Luintel, the head of the
department, ended his term in mid-July. On the basis of seniority, the department recommended the names of Sherpa as number one, Tikaram Gautam as number two and Manhari Dhakal as number three.
But the Humanities and Social Sciences Dean's Office sent Gautam's name to one number and Sherpa's name to the executive council. After that recommendation, there was a dispute between teachers and students close to Congress and UML. Congress close to Gautam and The UML party demanded to appoint Sherpa.
It is alleged that some students even threatened the officials to appoint Gautam. Officials of the University wrote to the Ministry of Education and demanded security.
