The Kremlin said on Friday that Russia would impose domestic sanctions on US media outlets in response to Washington's ban on Russian-funded news network RT.

The United States on Wednesday indicted two RT employees, accusing Moscow of running a malicious campaign aimed at influencing the country's upcoming presidential election.

'A uniform response is not possible, there is no state news agency in the US and there is no state television in the US', Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the RIA Novosti news agency, 'but of course there will be measures that will restrict their media from broadcasting their information .'

In a rare admission of Russia's tight grip, Peskov also justified Moscow's unprecedented censorship during the invasion of Ukraine.

He told Tas news agency In a different comment given, he said, 'In the state of war we are in, bans are justified and censorship is also justified.' He did not say what kind of sanctions Russia would impose against American media.

Most US media outlets cut or removed their staff from Russia amid laws targeting independent reporting on the conflict as Moscow launched its offensive in Ukraine.

The 10 individuals and two organizations sanctioned by the US Treasury Department on Wednesday include RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan and her deputy Elizaveta Brodskaya .
