The United Nations Relief and Works Agency reported on Thursday that the floods have affected more than 710,000 people in 30 of the 78 counties in South Sudan and Abyei Administrative Region.

Floods caused by heavy rains that started in May have caused serious humanitarian crisis such as severe food insecurity, economic decline. In a statement issued by the

organization in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, it is said, 'Floods have caused widespread damage to houses, crops and critical infrastructure since May. Education and health services have been disrupted and the risk of disease outbreaks has increased.'

High-level discussions in Juba on Monday and Tuesday reviewed the preparedness of the 2024 flood and response plan.

United Nations agencies have called for coordinated action to tackle the growing outbreak. Humanitarian partners are working to rapidly address the immediate needs of flood victims with life-saving assistance.

The country's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation issued an urgent appeal on August 20 to relocate communities in the lower reaches of the Nile. The water level at Mangala Telemetric Station in Juba County has reached a five-year high of 14.85 meters.
