In Calcutta, West Bengal, India, on August 9, students and junior doctors continued their protest at the 'RG Kar Medical College and Hospital' against the killing of a female colleague and alleged sexual harassment.

The impact of this movement of doctors has also been felt in other places of the country. Doctors staged protests in several cities across the country, including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai. The case has been transferred from the state police to the Central Bureau of Investigation after a Calcutta High Court order.

Students and doctors are protesting against the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Calcutta, while nationwide strikes and protests are being held by the medical community.

On August 14, a crowd gathered to demonstrate in the hospital premises of RG Kar Medical College vandalized, and keeping in mind the security of the hospital, the security personnel dispersed the crowd by using air force and even tear gas.

To maintain law and order, Calcutta Police has invoked Article 163 of the Constitution with effect from August 18 around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Amid ongoing protests, Calcutta Police has announced that Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code (CrPC Section 144 before 2023) has been enforced for seven days around medical colleges and hospitals.
