  • The movement, which started in opposition to the reservation in government jobs for the children of people active in Bangladesh's freedom movement, took a violent form

Protests against the continued reservation and quota system in government jobs in Bangladesh have intensified. Demonstrations by university students have become nationwide.

According to BBC Bengali service , at least 25 people have died in different parts of Bangladesh so far. In addition, hundreds have been injured in the clashes.

The demonstration did not stop even after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's speech. Prime Minister Hasina addressed the nation on Wednesday. She asked the protesting students to be patient. She said that everyone will get justice through the court process. But after his speech, the demonstration became more nationwide. Internet service has been stopped in various parts of the country.

Since Thursday evening, most of the online media in Bangladesh have not even posted news. Also television channels are not live streaming on social media and YouTube . Most Bangladeshi television channels broadcast live on YouTube .

Why did the show get loud?

The movement that started in opposition to the reservation given in government jobs to the children of people active in the independence movement of Bangladesh took a violent form. Bangladesh was separated from Pakistan in 1971 after the freedom struggle of 'Mukti Bahini'. The students of the university had been rallying at various places for a few days against the reservation system.

Violent clashes have taken place between the Bangladesh Students League (BCL), a sister organization of the ruling Awami League, and the police of students protesting against reservation. While the students' league is in favor of the government's plan, other students have opposed it saying that reservation will only benefit special people. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets after a clash between anti-reservation students and BCL members.

In Bangladesh, there is a provision of reservation for women, ethnic minorities and physically challenged people in some government posts. A third of the posts are reserved for children of men classified as 'wartime heroes'. The protesting students say that the system is discriminatory and say that government jobs should be filled on the basis of merit.
