  • A Nepali working in Lebanon says: We are not panicking, but we are cautious

The Nepali Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, which looks after the Lebanon affairs, has collected the details of the Nepali workers working in Lebanon and asked them to be alert and aware. The tension between Lebanon and Israel has increased since Fuad Sukar, the senior commander of Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli attack in Dayihaya near Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Keeping in view the changing situation, the Nepali Embassy has started collecting details of Nepalis working in Lebanon.

The embassy has also requested Nepali workers to contact the unpaid Nepalese consulate in Beirut. "There is also a request for Behora, who is continuously monitoring the developments and is contacting and coordinating with the relevant agencies through the non-paid consulate in Beirut for the safety of Nepali citizens," said the notice issued by the embassy.

Ashok Thapa of Hetounda working in Lebanon said that they are updated about the latest developments. According to him, around 500 Nepalis are working in Beirut. They are employed as domestic workers, hotels and industries.

'The bomb attack in Lebanon is a Muslim-majority area. That place can be reached in two hours by bus from the place where there are Nepalis. There are no Nepalis in that area," said Thapa, who is the former president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, Lebanon. "The situation in the Beirut area is normal. As it was before, people's life is the same now.'

He said that he is confident because Nepalis live in an area where there is a majority of Christians. There are as many Nepalis here as there are. Everyone is in touch with each other . If someone new has come, they are not in contact," he said. "Not everyone is panicking. Even the Lebanese are not panicking.'

Dilu Limbu from Jhapa, who has been working in Beirut for 16 years, said that she is thinking of returning to Nepal only if the situation worsens. "There is no need to panic about the current situation in Beirut." The local residents are also saying that it does not affect outsiders. They are saying that this is a fight between them," Limbu said, "Whoever feels the love of his life . If there is a big crisis, I will move to the country.'

Maya Tamang of Sindhupalchok, who has been working in Lebanon for 12 years, said that they are not thinking of returning home immediately. "I am currently working in a Lebanese house in the mountains near Beirut." Nothing has happened where we live . But, the moneylenders of my house are asking if your embassy is in Beirut," she said. "Since I came here, I have always heard that there is only fighting. I have not yet experienced such an effect. I will return to Nepal only if something happens.'
