Madan Karki of Bhimdatta Municipality-9 Khalla finds it difficult to save his life when the Khare river floods. In the third week of June, the flood which came with incessant rain reached the yard. The road near the house was completely washed away by the flood. "If there is a flood at night, you can't even run away," said Karki.
The flood in the third week of June has caused a lot of damage in the area. The planted rice field has also been washed away. "Now the river has reached the house, sometimes it will take the house," said Meena Lavad, a local, "I am afraid to stay at home when the flood comes." According to her, the flood two weeks ago has caused a lot of damage in the Khalla area.
5 km north of Brahmadev in Chure foothills, Chure is east of Khalla settlement and Mahakali river is in west. This settlement is always at risk due to more than half a dozen rivers flowing in between. The road to Khalla Musetti is blocked due to floods. Because of this, children have problems from shopping for daily necessities and even around school. "If someone is sick, we have to carry them," said Kisan Bhat of Musetti.
Residents of Musetti with Bhat reached the municipal office on Wednesday to express similar complaints. There are only basic schools in Khalla and Musetti. Students of that area have to go to Brahmadev to study secondary level. After the road is blocked, children walk for an hour and a half to go to school. They say that it is not possible to walk when Khare river rises due to rain. There are more than 500 families living in three settlements in the area namely Khalla, Tundikhel and Musetti. These settlements in the Mahakali Corridor are disconnected from the road during the rainy season. Birendra Bishta of Musetti said that it is a problem to take the pregnant women and the elderly to the hospital. According to him, after the rain in the third week of June in Musetti, the electricity service is also interrupted.
More than 300 families in the area are in the dark due to faulty transmitters. "The whole village has become dark," Bista said, "on the one hand there is a risk of floods, on the other hand there is fear of snakes and insects due to lack of electricity." The phone service was also suspended in the area for a week. Bista said that even though the phone service is operating now, it is like being blocked due to the lack of electricity, unable to charge mobile phones. Due to the blocking of the road, it has become difficult to get even daily consumables from salt to oil in that area. Locals have walked for two hours to reach Tanakpur via Brahmadev to bring food. Now even the walking path has been washed away. Residents of that area have to reach Brahmadev even for Kutani-Pisani.
