Highlights

  • The plane of Solar Airlines, which had taken off about 1,250 meters from the south Koteshwar point of the runway of Kathmandu International Airport, flew 700 meters, became unbalanced and crashed on the ground.
  • Rescued captain continues treatment, 18 dead

A Solar Airlines plane crashed at the Kathmandu International Airport on Wednesday while flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara for detailed inspection and maintenance (C-Check). The accidents that happen every year have drawn the world's attention to Nepal's air safety.

18 people died on the spot when a Canadian 'Bombardier Jet CRJ-200' plane with a capacity of 50 seats of Solar Air crashed again on Wednesday (non-commercial flight). Captain Manishratna Shakya has been rescued alive.

The technical and management staff of Sourya Airlines were on board the plane that flew for regular testing and maintenance using the facilities available at Pokhara Regional International Airport. 4 senior engineers died in the accident. Yemeni citizens have also been involved in the accident. He is an engineer living in Nepal and working in an airline company. Sourya's IT head Manuraj Sharma, wife Preeja Khatiwada and son Adhiraj are also among the deceased. Umesh Acharya, Deputy General Manager of Solar, says that there are full-time employees in Prija Energy Ministry and contract employees in Solar Airlines.

The flight data recorder (FDR) of the aircraft and the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) that recorded the dialogue between the pilot and the ATC in Wednesday's accident have been found by the Civil Aviation Authority. The cause of this phenomenon can be detected by these two tools. Apart from this, Manishratna Shakya, the chief commander of the flight and operations director of Solar Airlines, was rescued alive and he will also explain the cause of the accident.

It is seen on the CCTV that after traveling about 1250 meters from the last point of the runway (Koteshwar) on the south side of the runway, Solar's ship flew 700 meters and became unbalanced. The right wing of the plane touched the ground and fell into a ditch outside the runway. Earlier, the ship sank 300 meters down, destroying the Air Dynasty helicopter station and the accompanying container. Balkrishna Pandit, manager of Air Dynasty, said that only 5 minutes before the accident, the employees of Air Dynasty went to eat, so they were saved. According to him, the helicopter spare parts, engines and equipment worth crores in the container have been damaged. Surya's ship is divided into three parts. An airport employee involved in fire control said that the pilot was saved as part of the cockpit fell inside the Air Dynasty container. He claims that the rescue operation started immediately.

The fire on the plane that crashed at 11:11 was brought under control in about 1 minute. Captain Shakya was taken to Kathmandu Medical College in Sinamangal by the airport ambulance. All 18 bodies were taken to Maharajganj Teaching Hospital at 1:18 PM. After the accident, the army, police and armed police were deployed for rescue, 60 ambulances from Kathmandu reached the airport for rescue.

On Wednesday, the ATCs of the airport were allowing domestic flights to take off and land in a 'visibility' of about 7,000 meters without any effect of the wind. After Surya, Shri and Buddha Air were about to take off. But after the accident, both of them returned from the Napasi taxiway on the runway.

According to Airport General Manager Jagannath Niraula, the airport was closed from 11:11 to 12:15. With the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport, 7 ships coming to Kathmandu from Bhairahawa, Pokhara and Simra returned there. The Malaysian Air coming from Kuala Lumpur to Delhi and the plane coming from Dhaka were 'diverted' to Bangladesh.

According to the maintenance schedule of Sourya's ship in the authority, it could be flown for another 119 hours before it was sent to C-check. According to international regulations on repairs, companies maintain a margin of time for taking them abroad if repairs are impossible at the domestic airport. According to that, Sourya was taking the ship to Pokhara for 'positioning' before the period of 119 hours.

As there will be at least 300 technical tests during the sea-check of the ship, Sourya had taken permission from the authority to call two expert engineers from Turkey. "We had sent a truckload of goods and some junior technicians to Pokhara a few days ago," said Mukesh Khanal, marketing head of Sourya.

The company has decided to go to Pokhara with our own technicians and engineers to do it in Nepal this time.'

Established 10 years ago through charter flights, Solar is the first airline in Nepal to serve domestic flights with CRJ-200 jet aircraft. It currently has 8 daily flights to Bhadrapur and Biratnagar from two planes.

Since the first air accident in Simra in August 2012, till Wednesday, 118 air accidents have occurred in Nepal in 69 years. According to the co-spokesperson of the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority, Gyanendra Bhul, the number of deaths in small ship/helicopter accidents in Nepal has reached at least 959.

Out of the 7 accidents that occurred inside and outside the Tribhuvan International Airport, an accident of the same nature as the Yeti accident that occurred at US Bungalow, Sita Air and Pokhara was repeated on Wednesday.

Four years ago, 51 people lost their lives when a US-Bangla flight from Bangladesh crashed inside the Tribhuvan International Airport. A year and a half ago, 72 people were killed when an ATR plane of Yeti Airlines crashed while landing at Pokhara International Airport, and 19 people died when a Dornier plane of Sita Air, which was going from Kathmandu to Lukla, crashed in Manhara 14 years ago.

Those concerned with air services have expressed their displeasure that the government has formed an incident investigation commission in the old style under the leadership of former director general Ratish Chandra Lal Suman. "The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) under the United Nations has said that an independent investigation commission with resources and expertise should be formed to investigate the accident according to the Chicago Convention and to prevent accidents of the same nature," said a senior Air Traffic Controller (ATC) who is knowledgeable about air safety in Nepal. He said to Kantipur, 'It was seen that the government is trying to remove the weed by forming a commission when incidents of the same nature and facilities are being repeated around the airport. When this commission also works in the style of the old commissions, we will still have to face air accidents.'
