  • The UN said the Summit of the Future conference will seek practical strategies to achieve common aspirations.

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has sent an invitation to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to participate in the 'Summit of the Future' conference to be held in New York next October.

The conference is going to be held under the leadership of Secretary General Guterres to show the way forward in the current crisis world situation.

Summit of the Future has been interpreted as an important meeting that unites leaders to redefine the path of the future while protecting the challenges of the current situation in the world .

The UN has started inviting heads of government and heads of state from around the world to participate in the same conference. As a continuation of the same, on May 24, Hana Singler Hamdi, the resident representative of the UN in Nepal, met Prime Minister Dahal and handed over the invitation letter of Secretary General Guterres.

On that occasion, Prime Minister Dahal said that he was positive to participate in the conference organized by the UN. Hamdi, the resident representative of the UN, mentioned that Nepal is providing important support to the UN's world peace campaign and said that Nepal should participate in the upcoming "Summit of the Future" for the role played by Nepal in the recent climate change .

With the invitation to Prime Minister Dahal, the government has also started homework regarding the Summit of the Future. The Summit of the Future conference will be held on October 6 and 7. Germany and Namibia are co-hosts of the conference.

What is the Summit of the Future?

The conference, which is going to be held by the UN for the first time, has been mentioned as a high-level event. Where world leaders are brought together to help create a new international consensus on how to improve the current situation and how to secure the future. It is mentioned that the

conference will work to improve the lack of trust in the current generation and show that international cooperation can effectively face the challenges that have appeared in recent years. In the words of Secretary General Guterres, the world is currently in the most critical situation since the Second World War. Guterres is saying that there is a weakness in multilateralism and the problem of climate change is increasing day by day. There are two big wars going on in the world now, and internal and external conflicts are going on in many places.

Although the Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for two years, it is not in a state of stopping, while the conflict between Israel and Hamas in West Asia is also continuing. These two wars are affecting the economic, social, political, diplomatic, climate and other fields all over the world . On the other hand, it seems difficult to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the UN from 2016 with 17 goals under the slogan "Leave no one behind".

In 2019, poverty has increased due to the economic sector being badly affected by the Covid-19 infection. While the SDG slogan is 'leaving no one behind', there is a situation in the world where the rich continue to get richer and the poor continue to fall into the grip of poverty.

Secretary-General Guterres brought out in the report 'Our Common Agenda' to address the issues of peace and security . In which he proposed a summit to set a 'new agenda for peace' with more investment for peace building, support for regional conflict prevention. The Secretary General has promoted this dialogue to reduce strategic risks such as nuclear weapons and cyber war in a peaceful and sustainable manner.

Guterres described the conference as an opportunity to "reinvigorate global action, re-commit to fundamental principles and further develop the framework of multilateralism".

'I propose a Summit of the Future conference to build a new global consensus on what our future should be and what we can do today to secure it . "Humanity has shown time and time again that we are capable of great achievements when we work together," said Secretary-General Guterres. Now is the time to take the next step in our journey together in unity and for all people. According to

UN, the conference will intensify the efforts of member countries to fulfill their current international commitments and take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities. In which all the member countries will agree and proceed. The countries leading the conference have a program to negotiate and support the agreement reached in the discussion and dialogue.

Other goals including LDG have already been set by the UN, but they are not yet fulfilled. On the other hand, even though new challenges and opportunities are increasing, there is a squeeze on the UN that we have not been able to work effectively. "The speed and complexity of development has outstripped our systems for cooperation and coping." The benefits and opportunities of progress are unevenly distributed, leaving the majority of people behind,' the UN noted at the Summit of the Future, 'risks and threats are also unevenly perceived . Inequality affects the weakest .'

Poverty and hunger have increased . Global emissions are at the highest level in human history . The UN believes that threats such as climate, conflict, food security, weapons of mass destruction, epidemics and health crises and risks related to new technologies are on the rise. Building on established frameworks such as the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda for the Implementation of the SDGs, the Summit of the Fuser Conference will provide practical strategies to achieve our shared aspirations. The UN says that it is looking for.

'Our Common Agenda' (Our Common Agenda) report has proposed the conference. The report was a response by UN Secretary-General Guterres to a call from member states for ideas on how best to respond to current and future challenges. The

Common Agenda report calls for renewed trust and unity at all levels between peoples, countries and generations. It calls for a fundamental rethinking of our political, economic and social systems . so that they are implemented more fairly and effectively for all .

It also recommended a similar renewal of the multilateral system . Together with the Summit of the Future as the defining moment to agree on the most important reform . The UN took steps after the member states agreed to hold a conference in October to review the current situation and find a way to agree on the way forward. They also agreed that there will be an agreement for the future of the conference.

According to the UN, the main objectives and agreements of the Summit of the Future are 5 . The first is to reaffirm the United Nations Charter. The second is to revive multilateralism . Third, Emphasizing the implementation of existing commitments. Fourth, agree on a solution to the new challenge. And, the fifth is to restore faith.

The UN has claimed that the conference will create conditions for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to be more easily achieved. It is said to improve international cooperation and enable everyone to solve problems together. We will be able to use new opportunities for the benefit of all, not just a few. And, we will be able to manage risks more effectively," the document of the conference said, "Each proposal proposed by the Secretary-General for consideration at the conference will have a significant impact on achieving sustainable development goals."

What is Nepal's role?

Nepal is one of the countries most affected by climate change. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal went to the COP-28 in Dubai and claimed before the international community that Nepal should get compensation through the damage and loss fund as our country is more affected due to the environmental emissions caused by others. Also, while visiting Nepal last year, UN Secretary General Guterres informed the world about the effects of climate change in the Himalayan region.

He also explained the serious impact of climate change in the Himalayan region of Nepal at COP-28. After covid-19, the economy of Nepal has also been affected. Also, the Sustainable Development Goals are difficult for Nepal to achieve in 2030. Due to the recent wars and conflicts in the world, Nepal continues to be affected. Nepal has been sending peacekeepers for world peace and Nepal is number one in the list of countries sending peacekeepers.

Former ambassador Arjun Karki, who has been working closely with the UN for more than two decades, says that the Summit of the Future will be organized by focusing on the current new development agendas. He said, 'Nepal should prepare for this conference from its side and it is appropriate to put its issues on the international stage.' Mahesh Bhattarai, joint secretary of the Planning Commission, informed about the progress of homework regarding the conference.

He said, "Now we are in the process of completing the report of the 'Voluntary National Review' of the sustainable development goals that Nepal is going to prepare for the third time in the UN. With the completion of that report, we will start the homework of the 'Summit of the Future.' Main objective and contract

1. Recommitment to the UN Charter

2.

to revitalize multilateralism 3.

emphasizing the implementation of existing commitments 4.

to agree on a solution to a new challenge 5. A

that restores trust
