Traffic accidents and human casualties have decreased in Kathmandu Valley. According to the Valley Traffic Police Office, in the last three years, accidents and human casualties in the valley have been decreasing.

In the financial year 2078/79, 10,733 vehicle accidents resulted in the death of 191 people. In the year 2079/80, 187 people died in 10,675 accidents and in the last year, 177 people died in 8,881 vehicle accidents.

According to him, 129 men and 48 women died last year. Police Superintendent Khadka claims that by making the traffic management of the valley effective with public awareness programs, strict security checks, and various campaigns, some reduction in road accidents has been achieved. Compared to the previous fiscal year, he informed that the number of accidents and deaths decreased by 16.8% and 6% in the last year.

Khadka said that the plan to make the traffic management reform more effective with the goal of reducing accidents has been advanced in the current year as well. It is his understanding that the public awareness program has inspired the road users to follow the traffic rules and understand the road safety.

Traffic week program, passenger-friendly special campaign, traffic awareness special campaign and other traffic activities included in the program, police said that 477,333 people have been directly benefited so far.

Senior Superintendent of Police Jeevan Kumar Shrestha, head of the office, said that the traffic police campaign against driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, following lane discipline, reckless driving and reducing accidents due to speeding has been effective. According to him, the traffic police has taken action against more than 1 million people who violated traffic rules and collected 726 million rupees as fine.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shrestha said that regular patrols have been started in various road-focused awareness programs, traffic safety checks, expansion of checkpoints, inner streets and narrow roads and corridors and informed that more plans are being made to make it more effective.
