A courtesy meeting was held between Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka and Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Salahuddin Noman Chaudhary. Various matters of energy cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh were discussed in the meeting held at the Ministry of Energy on Sunday.

In the meeting, Energy Minister Khadka said that there is a huge potential of hydropower in Nepal and the meeting has helped to deepen the cooperation between the two countries as there is a growing need for energy in Bangladesh.

He expressed confidence that the upcoming meeting of the two countries' secretaries and joint secretaries will be fruitful as they will discuss and decide on various important issues including cooperation in the construction of large hydropower projects, the agreement of the Indian side on the international transmission line and the start of electricity trade.

Energy Minister Khadka said that the historic tripartite electricity trade agreement between Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh Power Development Board and Electricity Trade Corporation of India will soon be signed and Nepal will use the Indian transmission line to export electricity to Bangladesh during the rainy season and will open the door to electricity trade between the two countries .

Minister Khadka expressed confidence that necessary steps will be taken by the embassy to sign a joint venture agreement between Nepal Electricity Authority and Bangladesh Power Development Board for the construction and development of the 680 MW Sunkoshi reservoir hydropower project. In the

meeting, Ambassador Choudhary said that Bangladesh is trying to advance the energy cooperation between Nepal and Bangladesh by signing a 40 MW power purchase agreement soon. He mentioned that Bangladesh will support Nepal in the development of power generation, trade and transmission lines.

Ambassador Choudhary said that Bangladesh is producing more from less land in the agricultural sector with the latest irrigation system and will provide the necessary support to introduce this technology in Nepal. Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Gopal Prasad Sigdel, senior energy expert of the Ministry Prabal Adhikari and others were present in the meeting.
