  • Farmers are excited by the campaign which started when cardamom cultivation was dying due to disease, disaster and old plants.

A replanting campaign has been started from Ilam with the aim of increasing the production along with the protection of cardamom which is considered as 'gold of Kholsi'. Cardamom is being exported especially to third countries including India. Cardamom replanting campaign based on new technology has been started after seeing the possibility of cardamom cultivation dying out due to various diseases, disasters and old plants. It is led by the Nepal Cardamom Traders Federation.

Nirmal Bhattarai, president of the Nepal Cardamom Business Federation, claims that since this campaign was started with the participation of provincial and local governments, businessmen, farmers and other stakeholders, it will reap rewards. Four hundred seedlings have been planted for the nursery in the tunnel built with the financial support of the federation for the cardamom nursery in Rong. "Four thousand seedlings will be produced from this nursery next year and distributed to the farmers," Bhattarai said.

Federation is an organization directly connected with farmers, says Bhattarai, president of the federation, that it will emphasize farmer-targeted programs. He said that the campaign started from Ilam will be extended to all districts where cardamom is produced. Rajan Pariyar, Head of Cardamom Development Center, claims that from the plants produced by tissue culture technology, income can be taken for the next 40-50 years. "But farmers should pay special attention to planting techniques, irrigation and sanitation," he said.

Cardamom, which has died due to various reasons, will be revived through the replanting campaign, said Lekhraj Dahal, secretary of the ministry. More than one lakh farmers and businessmen across the country are involved in cardamom cultivation, which is the main source of income for Koshi. Somraj Lepcha, a farmer of Rong Rural Municipality, said that this campaign has brought both happiness and enthusiasm to the farmers who are becoming depressed due to cardamom being crushed.

Cardamom is cultivated in a total area of 19 thousand hectares across the country. About 7 to 8 billion rupees are being received annually from the export of products obtained from this. Nepali cardamom is considered as a quality agricultural produce in India and third countries. Cardamom farmers are becoming more excited as the price has also increased since last year.
