Highlights

  • At least 90 police personnel including the DIG of Nepal Police and at least 16 police personnel including two DIGs of the Armed Police will go on compulsory retirement from Sunday after the Supreme Court ordered that the 30-year term will be maintained.

The Supreme Court has revoked the previous interim order demanding removal of the 30-year service period in the Nepal Police. The interim order given by the bench of Judge Hari Phuyal on August 6 in favor of the police officers who are going to retire due to their 30 years of service was canceled by the bench of Judges Saranga Subedi and Vinod Sharma on Friday.

The government filed a vacancy petition in the Supreme Court against the interim order. While hearing the petition, Supreme Court Spokesperson Achyut Kunikel informed that the court has given the order as per the demand in the vacancy.

21 officers including the SSP of Nepal Police filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding that they not be retired from service. While hearing the said writ, the bench of Judge Phuyal gave an interim order in favor of the writ and set a priority hearing for October 10th.

The Ministry of Home Affairs filed a vacancy petition in the Supreme Court through the Attorney General's Office against the said order. Along with this, the applications have to be sent from Sunday due to the service period.

Had the earlier interim order of the Supreme Court been continued, their service period would have continued until the interim order was lifted . Three days after the police gave a writ to the Supreme Court regarding the service period, 12 officers including two DIGs of Sasya Police also filed a writ in the Supreme Court demanding the service period .

Judge Subedi's bench refused to grant an interim order in that writ. The court asked for a written response from the government within 15 days. After the Supreme Court ordered on Friday that the 30-year term will be maintained, at least 90 police personnel including the DIG of Nepal Police and at least 16 police personnel including two DIGs of the Armed Police will go on compulsory retirement from Sunday .

Among those who joined the service as assistant inspectors on August 16, 2051, some of them were transferred from the police in 2058 and went to the armed police.
