UML MP Vidya Bhattarai has been appointed as Minister of Education, Science and Technology. She took the oath of office and secrecy from President Ramchandra Paudel on Monday.

She was working as an assistant professor in Tribhuvan University till 6 years ago . She became a Federal Member of Parliament by being directly elected from Kaski Constituency No. 2.

52-year-old Bhattarai was active as a member of the Education, Health and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives.

After her husband, the then Minister of Culture and Tourism and UML leader of Kaski Ravindra Adhikari passed away in the Taplejung Pathibhara helicopter accident, she resigned as a deputy professor and became active in politics .

In the by-election held in 2076, Bhattarai was elected from Kaski and entered the parliament. In the 2079 election, she was elected for the second time from the same region.

She studied post-graduation in sociology up to MPhil in anthropology and was an associate professor of sociology in Trivim. She was a member of UML since 2046.

In 2055, the Central Secretary of the Union of Women, Secretary of the Valley Women's Committee, in 067, a member of the Federal Women's Department, and in the education department of the party until 075, she became a minister for the first time. The Ministry of Education has got a woman education minister for the second time in a row.

Earlier on 23rd of February 2080 Sumana Shrestha, MP of Rashtriya Swatantra Party was Education Minister. Bhattarai became the education minister after UML president KP Sharma Oli was appointed prime minister after the collapse of the power alliance led by Maoist center chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
