The country's total connected electricity capacity has reached 3,157 megawatts. Announcing the achievement of three years of the second term of the Nepal Electricity Authority on Friday, Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that the total connected capacity has reached 3157 megawatts through the organization of the subsidiary companies of the authority and the private sector.

According to the authority, hydroelectric power accounts for 95 percent of the electricity capacity, i.e., 2991 megawatts. According to Ghising, thermal energy is 53 megawatts, solar energy is 107 megawatts and biomass energy is 6 megawatts.

The authority claims that 2,300 megawatts have been added in the last eight years alone. Ghising also said that 1706 megawatts have been added in the last 3 years alone. Chandan Ghosh, spokesperson of the Authority, said that 500 MW of electricity is being exported every day. Ghosh said that the current high demand for electricity is 2650 MW. He stated that the total electricity connected capacity of the authority, its subsidiary companies and the private sector has reached 2991 megawatts.

The power purchase and sale agreement (PPA) with the private sector power projects, which was stalled for various reasons until eight years ago, has been opened and separate rates have been set for reservoir, peaking run of river, run of the river and solar energy. Recently, Ghising also says that the attraction of domestic and foreign investors in Nepal's hydropower has increased.

"Eight years ago, only 2800 MW of electricity purchase agreement was signed, due to the policy taken to encourage private sector projects, now more than 10,300 MW of electricity purchase agreement has been signed," said Ghising. In the year 2028/29, Nepal's connected capacity is projected to reach 10,000 megawatts.

'About 7,000 megawatt projects are in various stages of construction to meet that target, another 10,000 megawatt projects are in the process of power purchase agreement,' Ghising said, 'Giving priority to solar power generation, the authority has invited bids for PPA of additional 800 megawatts of solar power.

The authority that has been increasing its income recently has increased its investment not only in transmission lines but also in electricity generation. Through the authority's subsidiary company, 140 MW Tanahun Reservoir, 40 MW Rahughat and 37 MW Upper Trishuli 3B, 20 MW Rollwaling projects are under construction.

The 270 MW project under construction under the leadership of Chilime, a subsidiary of the authority, is in the final stages of operation. Chilime Hydroelectricity Company has advanced about 300 megawatts of additional hydropower projects. According to the authority, the construction of 42 MW Upper Modi 'A', 18.2 MW Upper Modi, 210 MW Chainpur Seti, 99 MW Tamakoshi Fifth has started. One thousand 63 megawatt upper Arun and 670 megawatt Dudhkoshi reservoir hydropower projects have reached the stage of construction after financial management.

Sunkoshi-3 reservoir hydropower project of 683 megawatts has been advanced to be built with the investment of the government agencies of Nepal and Bangladesh, the authority said. A detailed study process of 10,800 MW Karnali (Chisapani) Multi-Purpose Reservoir Project, which can be carried forward as a model project in the South Asian region, has been started.

In order to make the system reliable and quality by managing the fluctuations between daily demand and supply, the authority said that by identifying about 42 thousand megawatt pump storage hydropower projects in different parts of the country, further study of some excellent projects has been carried forward.
