The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) under the Department of Health Services has reported that cholera infection has been confirmed in 10 people across the country so far.

Cholera was confirmed in seven people in Lalitpur and three in Kailali, Director of the Division Dr. Yaduchandra Ghimire informed.

He said that personal hygiene and the managerial role of related agencies are important to avoid cholera. He said, 'Cholera is connected with water supply in addition to sanitation. In Lalitpur, the bacteria seen in feces was found in the well water. It may be mixed with sewage. It also depends on the condition of the toilet and how the waste is managed. It is important to pay attention to all these to prevent the spread of cholera.'

Cholera is a highly contagious diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae. Dr. Sher Bahadur Pun, an infectious disease specialist at Shukraraj Tropical and Communicable Disease Hospital, said, 'Cholera bacteria are caused by consuming contaminated food or water. Due to the lack of sanitation and clean drinking water, there is a possibility of this disease spreading.'

Cholera symptoms appear from less than one day to five days after infection. Experts say that if a cholera infection occurs and is not treated, the infected person may die within a few hours. According to Dr. Pun, its main symptoms are thin and watery stools, nausea and vomiting, severe dehydration. If there are severe symptoms, eyes will be buried, dry mouth, tongue and throat, thirst, dry skin, low blood pressure, yellow urine and low urine volume.

Dr. Pun says that cholera can be controlled by paying attention to three main things. The first is safe water, personal hygiene and the next is monitoring. He says that the most important part is to drink clean and pure water. Cholera spreads very easily and easily through contaminated water. People drink tap water by boiling or filtering it, but many people do not do that," he said. From schools to offices to public places, it is customary to keep jars of water. Some businessmen are sending untreated water to the market. As a result, cholera infection spreads.'

He said that personal hygiene has not been applied in practice. 'The management of toilets should be good. Waterborne diseases such as cholera can spread when toilets are poorly managed. For some reason, the bacteria in the faeces are washed away and end up in our drinking water. After using the toilet, it is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water', he said.

Dr. Pun opined that regular monitoring should be prioritized by the relevant agencies as some traders bring water to the market without treatment and people get sick. He says, 'If the monitoring is done strictly, it will come under control to a large extent. Because water-borne diseases are very low in developed countries.'

To avoid water-borne diseases including cholera, drinking boiled or chlorinated water, eating food thoroughly cooked, before preparing food and before eating or serving food, after urinating or after washing children's stool, after washing the garbage, before entering the house or office, outside items After touching, experts recommend that you wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water for at least 20 seconds.
