Ilam-2 is the constituency won by former Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang in the last general election 2079 BS. Nembang became an MP for the fifth time, defeating Dambar Bahadur Khadka of the Nepali Congress by a narrow margin. However, he died on 26 Bhadra 2080 BS, less than 9 months after becoming an MP.
A by-election was held in this constituency that was vacant after Nembang's death on 14 Baisakh 2081 BS. In that election, his son Suhang, who entered the electoral fray to protect his father's legacy, won by a landslide. He defeated Khadka of the Nepali Congress, whom his father had narrowly defeated in 2079 BS, by a margin of 5,830 votes. Suhang received 27,772 votes.
Suhang has been re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives 22 months after the by-election. He got 22,426 votes. His nearest rival, Congress's Bheshraj Acharya, got 14,650 votes. Sudip Rai of the Shram Sanskriti Party got 14,400 votes, while Gokul Bahadur Rai of the Rastriya Swatantra Party lost with 7,814 votes and Om Bahadur Gurung of the Nepali Communist Party lost with 1,172 votes.
He is the second leader to win from Koshi Province. Earlier, Kshitij Thebe had won from Taplejung. Suhang will now enter parliament representing the new generation of UML.
Born on Falgun 6, 2046, Suhang started his primary education from Galaxy Public School in Kathmandu. After completing his SLC from Jagat Mandir School in Kathmandu, he passed 12th from Gyanodaya Balwatika School.
During his higher studies, he also lived in Australia for about two and a half years. However, after returning to Nepal with the aim of studying law, he completed his LLB from Kathmandu School of Law. Following in his father's footsteps, he started practicing law. Suhang was active in the legal field even before his father's death. He established 'Kantipur Law Associates and Research Center' and practiced law in commercial and constitutional matters. He was also a central member of the UML's law department.
