One umpire's mistake after another in the NPL

What you should know

Pokhara Avengers bowler Matt Taylor made a strong appeal for a cut behind, but umpire Buddhi Bahadur Pradhan ruled it wide. The surprise came when Biratnagar batter Bashir Ahmed returned to the pavilion after being dismissed.

The umpire made such a wrong decision in the third match of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). By the sixth match, more than two dozen wrong decisions had been made by umpires and TV umpires.

On Friday alone, the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) had decided to impose a level 1 offence on Chitwan Rhinos fast bowler Region Dhakal and deduct 1 demerit point along with a warning. On Thursday, he had made a confident appeal against captain Rohit Poudel in the match against Lumbini Lions. But after the umpire rejected it, he stormed the field and expressed his anger.

In the same match, two serious errors were made by TV umpire Vinay Kumar Jha. Lumbini's opening batsman Sandeep Jora was caught out on Region's own ball. When Region went to check the decision, the television replay showed Region's foot crossing the umpire line. Television umpire Jha gave it out as a no-ball.

Chitwan's hopes of returning to the game ended when Lumbini captain Rohit was not given a stumping. The decision of stumping Rohit on Kushal Malla's ball had reached the TV umpire. But the decision given by television umpire Jha took about 6-7 minutes and Rohit was not out.

Chitwan's foreign players Ravi Bopara and David Malan expressed surprise to the on-field umpire saying that Rohit's foot was not in the line. Moreover, Chitwan's wicketkeeper Arjun Saud expressed his dissatisfaction with Jha's decision and started clapping towards the wicketkeeping position.

After the match, Bopara expressed his dissatisfaction with the umpire's decision. 'Some of the umpires' decisions were not in our favor.' I think there were some close LBWs,' Bopara said about not giving a stumpout to Rohit, 'The decisions on stumpouts were also like that. All the techniques were used in this decision, but the wrong decision was made, it is not exemplary. You cannot dispute this, you have to accept it and move forward.'

This defeat was a major blow to Chitwan, who were seen as title contenders. Lumbini captain Rohit himself was not satisfied with the umpires' decision. After the match against Chitwan, Rohit said, 'These are human mistakes, sometimes such mistakes happen. There are mistakes of this level at the international level too, but there is DRS. There are international umpires in the NPL, but still mistakes are being made continuously. It is better to improve on it and move forward than to blame someone.'

Rohit had also indicated that the umpires were weak in the stumpout decision against him. ‘I would have felt bad if I was in the opposition team. The decisions are being made wrong, how do I take it now,’ Rohit said, ‘I didn’t know if I was out or not. I was at the crease. I would have felt bad if I had been a member of the losing team in such a decision.’

There was a series of mistakes in the match against Sudurpaschim Royals and Kathmandu Gorkhas. In the second ball of the match, Sri Lankan umpire Pragith Rambukwela gave Josh Brown out LBW. While Karan KC’s delivery hit a big edge and reached the pads. After some time, Sri Lankan umpire Rambukwela made another big mistake. He did not accept the appeal for cut behind on Arif Sheikh off Sunny Patel’s delivery. While the television replay showed Gorkhas wicketkeeper John Simpson catching the ball after the ball hit the edge and changed the edge.

Simpson himself was the victim of an umpire's wrong decision in the second innings of the match. He was given out LBW on Ishan Pandey's ball. The television replay showed that the ball hit Simpson's gloves and did not even touch the pads. Immediately after the umpire's decision to give out, Simpson crossed his arms towards the umpire and signaled for DRS.

DRS is not in place in the ongoing NPL. The on-field umpire can send only certain cases, including stumping, runout, boundary checking, over-stepping, to the television umpire for the final decision. The teams have accused the umpires of turning a blind eye to the decisions of Haight's no-ball and wide ball. But they do not have this freedom to speak out. The controversial NPL turned into a controversy after two foreign umpires came and gave wrong decisions one after the other.

Sunny Patel, the last Gorkhaz player to be out after the match against Sudurpaschim, had a long argument with the on-field umpire. But Gorkhaz coach Monty Desai does not want to come to this issue. ‘Umpires are trying to play their role as best they can. I never want to go there. I want to play this game only in terms of bat and ball,’ he said, ending the series of wrong decisions by the umpires.

Chitwan had faced such a decision in the first match too. Kamal Singh Airi had strongly appealed for LBW against Priyank Panchal on 33 runs. But the umpire did not believe him. Kamal held his head and collapsed on the field after the decision was not in his favor. Bhagyamani Panchal scored 90 runs in 48 balls with 7 fours and 6 sixes.

The same thing happened in the match between Sudurpaschim and Pokhara Avengers on Friday. Kushal Bhurtel took a brilliant dive on the boundary line to catch Scott Kuggelein's shot. However, Bhurtel expressed his anger when the television umpire awarded a six saying that the catch touched the boundary.
