While working in the secretariat of former Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah, he arrived in Manahari on Magh 4 after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) fielded him as a candidate from Makawanpur-2.

His father Ramchandra Upreti had left the UML party after his son Prashant came with a ticket from the RSS. After winning the House of Representatives, he said that he would actively work to eliminate poverty and backwardness in his area.
