Surya Bahadur Tamang, a 41-year-old tourism entrepreneur from Marjetpur, Katari Municipality-7, Udayapur, has changed his identity. After being elected to Udayapur-2 from the National Independent Party in the House of Representatives election, Tamang became known as an MP. He defeated UML's Ambar Bahadur Rayamajhi by double the votes and entered the parliament. The elected Tamang got 14,802 votes, while his rival Rayamajhi got only 7,648 votes.
Tamang, who was the secretary of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party Udayapur, had entered the election fray saying that development was not possible from the old parties. Born in Marjetpur, Katari in 2041 BS, he passed his SLC from Saraswati Abi Marjetpur until grade 5 and Mavi Maruwa until grade 8 and Triveni Mavi. He did his higher education from Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus in Kathmandu.

He says that he has also become active as the new generation enters politics after corruption and unrest have crossed the line in the country. Tamang, who is popular among the youth, came to the limelight by leading a phased movement against the pollution spread by the limestone mine of Saurya Cement in Katari and the impact of the vibration of the mine on the locals.
Similarly, Tamang had repeatedly protested against the government by holding hunger strikes and fasts for the upgradation of the Siddhicharan highway. Through his activism, he contributed to the promotion of tourism in Gadhikot by building parks, planting fruit trees, building huts for tourists, making picnic spots, building infrastructure such as wooden benches for tourists, ping pong, selfie sports, tree rope climbing, and evening lighting.
He introduced himself as a tourism activist by conducting a campaign to introduce Marjitpur and Gadhikot for hiking, cycling, paragliding and camping with the slogan ‘Gadhikot for agriculture, culture and nature’ with the aim of attracting domestic and foreign tourists.
The voters of Udayapur-2 gave him immense love and responded that he would work according to the wishes and feelings of the citizens. Now, apart from policy and construction, he said that the upgrading of the Katari-Ghurmi road section, which has been incomplete for years, would be given first priority. Similarly, he said that he would work for the development and promotion of the Mukurchi-Majhakharka road, Ghurmi-Rupatar Sunkoshi corridor road, Sunkoshi lifting drinking water, establishment of a medical college in Katari.
