Amidst pressure to return the family legacy, 39-year-old Mohammad Firdos Alam, a Congress candidate from Rautahat-2, has won the House of Representatives election. Firdos, who lost to Kiran Kumar Sah, an independent candidate in the 2079 election, has started his parliamentary journey for the first time by defeating Sah by a margin of 11,086 votes. He is the eldest son of former minister and late Congress leader Mohammad Aftab Alam. Firdos is a young face active in current politics.
Firdos, who hails from Rajpurfardahwa, Rajpur Municipality, won with 29,528 votes. His closest rival Kiran Kumar Sah got 18,442 votes. Sheikh Sagir of the National Independent Party got 9,325 votes. In the 2079 House of Representatives election, the RSNP did not field a candidate in this constituency. Mohammad Firdos had entered the election fray with the responsibility of carrying forward the political legacy of his father Mohammad Aftab Alam. His political rise is considered a product of family legacy and circumstances rather than coincidence. He left his medical profession to fill the vacant political position after his father Aftab was jailed in a case of dutiful death. Firdos, who left his white coat and stethoscope to enter politics, has not been an ordinary rise. Amidst the compulsion to uphold the family legacy and pressure from local activists, he suddenly transformed from a doctor to a leader, which has given a new twist to the decades-old political legacy of Rajpur Fardahwa. Once busy treating patients, he has become the political leader of Rautahat-2. His brother Mohammad Razik Alam is currently the mayor of Rajpur Municipality.
Before entering politics full-time, he was a police inspector in the technical section of the Nepal Police. Firdos, who works at the Nepal Police Hospital, resigned from the police service in 2076 BS after his father was arrested in a dutiful death case under the Rajpur bombing. He completed his MBBS from Pakistan.
He has been trying to connect the youth of Muslims and other communities of Rautahat to development and social awareness. Maintaining religious harmony in this area and actively participating in various social festivals has become his daily routine. Financially, the Alam family is considered a wealthy and influential family in Rautahat. The main source of his family's income is agriculture, land and some business investments. He was unanimously selected by the Nepali Congress as a candidate for the House of Representatives from Rautahat-2. He has been interpreting the allegations against his father as political revenge. Although he is a doctor by profession, he has won the hearts of the people in a short time and has established himself as an influential young leader. He studied MBBS and worked in the medical field for some time. In the 2079 general elections, he filed his candidacy from Rautahat-2 while his father was in jail. For years, Rautahat-2 has been a political stronghold of the Alam family of Congress background. Earlier, Firdos' father Aftab had won elections from here repeatedly. Aftab passed away during treatment in 2009. After his father's death, Firdos is trying to maintain his political legacy. His grandfather Sheikh Idris won the election from the Praja Parishad in the 2015 elections. Idris is one of the old leaders of the Congress. After his death in 2054, his nephew Aftab took over the political legacy. In the absence of his father Aftab, it was a challenge for Firdos to keep his supporters united. Firdos said that this time the main election agenda is education, health, agricultural modernization, irrigation expansion, rural roads, employment creation and overall development of the border areas.
