”Never take a photo like this”

What you should know

According to the information received so far, 19 people have died and more than 300 have been injured during Jen-G's demonstration. The injured are being treated at Civil Hospital, Everest Hospital, Trauma Center, Veer Hospital. Four journalists who were working to collect the news of the movement were also injured. The live events seen by Kantipur Daily's photojournalists during Monday's demonstration are presented here.

The protestors were scheduled to gather at Maitighar and go to Baneshwar. Our group of photojournalists also gathered at Maitighar according to the same schedule. At 10.30 in the morning, a team of protestors reached New Baneshwar. The team easily went to Dhobikhol . The team was tried by the lawn police in the service lane, but because the crowd was big, they overpowered the police and started towards New Baneshwar from the main road.

The forbidden zone used to start in front of Everest Hotel . The agenda of the Zen-G group was to end the demonstration by sitting in front of the barricade placed by the police before the prohibited area started. Due to the large crowd, the protestors broke the barricade and proceeded to break through the restricted area and shouted slogans that they will now go to the Parliament Building area. After breaking the restricted area, the police tried to disperse the crowd by using water fountains. The protestors had already reached Baneshwar Chowk, thwarting the efforts of the police. At the same time, protestors from Tinkunye area also joined the crowd.

Then the repression of the police began . Initially, the police tried to disperse the crowd by firing tear gas. When the crowd became uncontrollable, the police opened fire. Some of the injured fell on the ground in a pool of blood. Some were picked up by the crowd and rushed to the nearby civil hospital. The protesters also set fire to the armed police ambulance that came to the same crowd. At this time, the protestors started shouting slogans by climbing on the top of the wall of the Parliament building. Then the police became more aggressive and fired indiscriminately . Most of the bullets were aimed at the head and chest.

Me, Dipendra Dhungana of Naya Patrika, Umesh Karki of Nepal Press, Niranjan Shrestha of AP and we were together in the photo team. Gunshots were coming. At this time, Dipendra, who was behind me, suddenly heard 'Aiya'. When I turned back, Dipendra was bleeding from his ear . When the bullet came from behind, Dipendra was hit. My hand was also burnt by shrapnel, while Umesh's hand was hit by a bullet. At this time, when Niranjan tried to carry Dipendra to the ambulance, Niranjan's camera was taken away.

In front of the main entrance of the parliament building, the body of the protester who died after being shot in the head was lying on the ground. Blood flowed near him. The protestors were angry that he died because the ambulance did not come in time. That's why they were targeting other ambulances as well. This made it more difficult to bring the injured to the hospital.

At this time, a stone thrown by the crowd hit my feet. The protestors did not allow the body to be picked up. Looking at him, another protester sat down. The flag of Nepal was draped over the body. The protestors were shouting slogans saying "Give the government the price of blood". It was such a photo, which made it very difficult for me to take . Mind was crazy .

At this time, I wished in my heart - never to take a photo like this .

”Never take a photo like this”

Monday's crowd looked very unruly. It was a spontaneous leaderless crowd . What the crowd says is happening. He failed in the mechanism that the police should have to control the crowd. Prior to this, the royalists' movement in Tinkune last March and the Korean EPS movement in Balkumari were also uncontrollable. But oppression was not seen in this form .

While taking photos, my legs trembled, my eyes watered

- Angad Dhakal

I have taken photos of various movements many times at different times. Whether it was during the protest of MCC or the movement of teachers, I took photos of all parties including UML, Maoist, Congress. But on Monday, the brutality of the Nepal Police and Armed Police on youths between the ages of 20 and 25 was different from the protests we have seen so far. In my 10 years of journalism, my legs trembled like this for the first time while photographing the movement. Eyes teared .

In previous protests, the police stopped the protestors after reaching the barricade in front of the Everest Hotel. This time the police missed badly . It was a grave mistake of the police to let the protestors go to Baneshwar from the barricade. That's why the boat reached the parliament building at once . And after reaching the main entrance of the Parliament building, the police took restraint for half an hour. He also requested the protestors not to proceed.

”Never take a photo like this”

But uncontrollable Jane Ji started to climb the main entrance wall . At first, the police started to fire tear gas . Even when the protestors reached the main entrance, another mistake of the police was not to call the 'backup force'. Coordination between Nepal Police and Armed Police was also very weak. The armed team of the Nepal Police appeared to be in awe of the armed forces for crowd control. Then the brutality of the Nepalese police was seen. The team of Nepal Police fired indiscriminately to control the unruly crowd. He didn't know where and who shot that bullet. 4-5 young men fell in front of me.

”Never take a photo like this”

I was taking pictures looking at a safe place . Meanwhile, I was scared when Dipendra Dhungana, a photojournalist of Naya Patrika, was shot. The indiscriminate shooting of the police did not stop. Carrying the injured, putting them on a stretcher and a motorcycle, the process of going to the hospital continued .

”Never take a photo like this”

The government's handling of the movement by the youth demanding an end to corruption is highly condemnable. Is this the responsibility of the state towards youth and citizens?

I had a meeting with Julus at Babarmahal . Even though the barricade was placed before reaching Baneshwar, the procession reached Baneshwar from the inner road. Even though there were security personnel behind the barricade in Baneshwar area, they could not control the procession. The procession seemed to be in a hurry to go to Parliament House.

When I was about to capture the scene from the roof of a house, a huge procession came from Tinkune area . There was no barricade to stop the procession. Therefore, the processions from both areas gathered in front of the parliament building. Immediately after that, tear gas was fired . When the procession was about to enter the parliament building, the shooting started .

”Never take a photo like this”

I got out after the lady I was riding requested that the police might come. A foreigner was also shooting video from the same house. He also left there . When the police started shooting one after another, I was taking pictures from a corner. It was heartbreaking to see a man with a bullet behind the Everest Hotel being taken to the Everest Hospital by a procession .

After a person died due to police firing, the ambulance was burnt by the angry crowd. The crowd of protestors was huge, perhaps even the police administration did not expect it to be so big. That is why so many human accidents happened.

When I saw the hospital, it seemed that this city was injured. After breaking the barricade in front of the Everest Hotel in Baneshwar, the police started throwing water fountains at the protestors. Splashing it, the crowd went straight to surround the parliament building . After the riot started there, some part of the crowd tried to climb the wall of the parliament building and the police started firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

I was safe and headed towards the water tank . There, the protestors were also trying to break the wall and gate to enter the parliament building. At that time, the police were firing tear gas and rubber bullets. One person was shot in the chest and carried away by the protesters. That scene was very difficult for me to watch. But I made a strong heart and captured that scene . After

I headed to Civil Hospital . I met photojournalist Dipendra Dhungana who was injured by a bullet under his ear. As he could not be treated there, we prepared to take him to Patan Hospital. At that time, the sound of gunshots was coming very loudly outside the civil hospital . An ambulance was also seen burnt . After a while, tear gas came inside the hospital. Tear gas made it very difficult for the patient . The hospital was full of wounded . It seemed like this city is sick.
