On this day (June 12) in 1991, Boris Yeltsin was elected President of Russia. Born on February 1, 1931, Yeltsin was the President of Russia until 1999.
A referendum held in Russia on March 17, 1991 established a presidential system. Yeltsin won the first election after that. He is known as the leader who laid the foundations of democracy in Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Yeltsin was elected for a second term in the 1996 presidential election. But he resigned on December 31, 1999 with his second term remaining. He resigned after gradually losing popularity in his second term. Yeltsin died on April 23, 2007 at the age of 76.
