On this day (May 13) in 1952, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first elected Prime Minister of India. Nehru became the Prime Minister after the Indian National Congress (INC) won a majority in the 1951-1952 Aman Nirvana in India.

India gained independence from British rule in 1947. Nehru, who became the Prime Minister after that, was the Prime Minister of India until his death on May 29, 1964.

India's first constitution was promulgated on November 26, 1949, after independence. According to the provisions of the said constitution, the first general election was held in India from October 25, 1951 to February 21, 1952. In the elections for 489 Lok Sabha seats, INC won 364 seats with 45 percent votes. The Socialist Party, which got 11 percent of the votes, won only 12 seats.

In the first general election, 1,949 candidates from 53 parties and 533 independents contested. There were 17 crore 32 lakh 12 thousand 343 voters in the 68-phase election. After independence in India, INC won five consecutive general elections in 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967 and 1971.
