World Chess Champion at 18

18-year-old Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju has become the world's youngest chess champion. Dommaraju became the world's youngest chess champion by winning the World Chess Championship organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Singapore.

Dommaraju created history by defeating defending champion Ding Liren of China in a thrilling match on Thursday. This series of 14 matches of the championship was eagerly watched by chess lovers all over the world for the last fortnight.  With the

victory, he became the 18th chess champion of the world. Before the last match, Dommaraju and Ding had won two games apiece and tied eight games. Dommaraju won the title with scores of 7.5 and 6.5 in Thursday's final match. He defeated Liren in 58 moves. With the win, he received a prize of 2.5 million US dollars.

Ding, who won the 2023 World Chess Champion title, was in a strong position in Thursday's match. But a critical mistake by Ding in the closing stages gave Dommaraju a chance to win. Earlier, Dommaraju was ranked second in India and fifth in the world.  Along with the

title, Dommaraju also broke the record of Russian Grandmaster Garry Kasparov. Kasparov won this title in 1985 at the age of 22. Dommaraju from Chennai, who played chess since childhood, won the Grandmaster title at the age of 12 years and 7 months. Chennai is considered the chess capital of India. But there are no other chess players in his family.

Dommaraju's father is a doctor and his mother is a microbiologist. Due to their busy schedules, they wanted to teach Dommaraju something other than studying. Then they got Dommaraju to learn chess. After seeing Dommaraju's potential, the coaches advised him for further training.

He is not the first person from India to become world chess champion. Earlier, Viswanathan Anand became the world chess champion in 2013. Dommaraju saw Viswanathan win the championship when he was seven years old. From that time Dommaraju pursued his dream of becoming a world chess champion. This is a dream I have had for the past 10 years. Which is complete,” said Dommaraju emotionally after defeating Liren. In a conversation with the BBC, Dommaraju said that he had many opportunities to win at various stages of the competition, but he could not take advantage of those opportunities due to stress.

Dommaraju also won gold medals for individual best performances in the last two Olympiads. (with the help of agencies)
