Khagendra Karna, 44, of Sarvodaya Tole, Kanchanrup Municipality-8, Saptari, whose father Bhupendra Narayan Karna ran a stationery shop and taught engineering, has succeeded in becoming a member of the House of Representatives.

He studied up to class 10 at Sarvodaya Secondary School, Kanchanpur, and completed Intermediate Engineering (I) on scholarship from Pokhara and then pursued his Bachelor of Engineering from Ekmi Engineering College, Kathmandu.

He was involved in the democratic movement of 2062/063 while he was still studying engineering. He was active in student politics as an active member of the Nepal Students' Union (NSU), a sister organization of the Nepali Congress, and held various positions until he became the founding president of the Purbanchal University NSU.

He also contested for the post of vice-president at the 11th general convention of NSU. However, he was defeated. Later, he was nominated as a central member of Nepal Tarun Dal. After serving as a central member of Tarun Dal for three years, he recently joined the National Independent Party (NIS) after ending his 15-year political journey with the Congress.

Having succeeded in becoming a member of the House of Representatives on a proportional basis from the Madhesi cluster, he says that he joined the NIS as part of a campaign to make the country prosperous and the Nepali people happy.

‘As a member of the House of Representatives now, I emphasize on bringing plans by keeping the agriculture sector as my first priority,’ he said. ‘Our country has great potential in the agricultural sector, but farmers here always face shortages and problems with improved seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation.’ He said that underground irrigation has not been utilized in the country and said that he would emphasize on underground irrigation. He also pointed out the need to bring forward plans for that as the country can prosper only if plans for commercial agriculture can be brought.

‘Big plans for the agricultural sector should be brought in the long term . That will definitely help in raising the standard of living and economic standard of the farmers,’ he said, ‘My understanding is that only by commercializing the agricultural sector can the country’s development be supported . I will take the initiative to include these plans in the policies and programs .’

Stating that the standard of education and health is deteriorating in 8 districts of Madhesh, MP Karna said that he would emphasize on completing the plans brought by the previous government to improve it . ‘If you look at the index before 2062/063 and the index after, it is very different . The condition of education and health in the districts of Madhesh is deteriorating greatly,’ he said, ‘The people of Madhesh have to go to Biratnagar-Kathmandu for education and treatment . To improve that, I will focus on completing the projects introduced by the previous government, including the Ramraja Institute of Health Sciences and Bardibas Medical College, on time.'

MP Karna says that he will work to the extent of lobbying the government to work in the tourism sector, as well as other free projects.
