Former diplomat Pramesh Kumar Hamal worked closely with the then UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal for a long time. In the meantime, he had many opportunities to become an MP, but he enjoyed formulating the party's policy.

He has already charted a political journey of nearly 5 decades by joining the CPN-ML, UML, Unified Socialist Party and the Nepali Communist Party (NCP). This time, he has entered the parliament to formulate the country's laws while formulating the party's policy.

Now, he will spend his 5 decades of political experience in parliamentary practice. The party also expects experienced politicians like him to play an effective role in the parliament as the opposition when the CPN (UML) is reduced in the elections. He also made it clear that his party is ready to play the role of a responsible opposition.

After the success of the 062/063 People's Movement, the then President of the Nepali Congress, Girija Prasad Koirala, became the Prime Minister. The new government, seeking an alternative to the monarchy, had brought a blueprint for radical changes in state institutions. The government and political parties moved forward on the path of a republic, reducing the extensive powers of the palace. The same government appointed him as ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg to oversee the European Union. ‘My political journey led to diplomacy from this point on,’ he said.

Even though the movement against the monarchy in Nepal was successful, he started working as an ambassador in a country where there was a king.

‘I recall an ‘interesting’ incident from that time. I was involved in the movement to remove the king in Nepal. After becoming an ambassador, I was working to satisfy the curiosity of how the monarchy could end peacefully in a country where there was a king,’ he recalled.

He became a UN representative during the time of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

UML became the largest party in the 2051 elections. A government was formed under the leadership of UML President Manmohan Adhikari. That government appointed him as a representative of the United Nations. After 9 months, the UML government collapsed, and he was recalled.

He joined the student organization in 2033 BS. He actively participated in the 2035/036 BS movement. ‘I then started working as an officer of Nepal Bank Limited in 2037 BS. I was also involved in politics there,’ he said, ‘My special responsibility was to coordinate the intellectual sector and lead and mobilize the organization. Later, the bank’s board met and expelled me.’

After the 2046 BS movement was successful, the party appointed him as the assistant secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Land Reforms. This was his first participation in political work.

In 2047 BS, he was the coordinator of the Nepal Intellectual Council close to the UML, and remained the general secretary until 2053 BS and led the Intellectual Council.

In 2062 BS, 7 political parties including the Congress and the UML were on the streets against the monarchy. The Maoists were at war. UML leaders Jhalanath Khanal and Bamdev Gautam were engaged in homework to negotiate with the Maoists. Hamal was also a member of that team. He was in Delhi and was extending his hand to the Maoists to fight against the monarchy.

‘At that time in Delhi, the idea was to intensify the movement by cooperating with the Maoists,’ he said.

After the electoral alliance between the UML and the Maoists in 2074 BS, the party united. At that time, the NCP formed the Policy Studies Institute. Jhalanath Khanal was the coordinator and Hamal was the co-coordinator.

After the UML split in Bhadra 2078, the CPN-UML was formed. Madhav Kumar Nepal became the chairman of the Samajwadi Party and Pramesh Hamal became the vice-chairman. After the Maoists and the Unified Socialist Party united last Kartik, he has been working as the central secretariat. In the 2009 election, he worked as the secretary of the election mobilization committee. The CPN-UML has made him an MP from the Khas Arya group on the proportional representation side.

‘If I can work as a good legislator, it will be an important asset for me,’ he said, ‘We will be in the role of a responsible opposition.’

Born in Kathmandu in 2013, he is currently living in Lalitpur.
