The deposits of more than 2,000 candidates who contested the recent House of Representatives elections have been forfeited. According to the Election Commission, 2,890 candidates could not even save their deposits in this election.

Election Commission Information Officer Suman Ghimire said that the candidates who did not get 10 percent of the votes are from the major parties Congress, UML, CPN and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Similarly, he said that the deposits of many independent candidates have been forfeited. Among the candidates who get more than 10 percent of the votes, their deposits will be returned, but the deposit of candidates who get less than 10 percent of the votes will be forfeited, Ghimire said. Of these, 350 candidates have not even cast a single vote.

According to Information Officer Ghimire, out of the 2,890 candidates whose deposits were forfeited, 350 candidates could not get a single vote. He claimed that it was confirmed that those candidates did not even vote for themselves. Of the candidates who contested directly, only 516 have managed to save their deposit by deducting 10 percent of the total votes cast.

According to the election law, the deposit amount is returned only if any candidate receives more than 10 percent of the total votes cast in the constituency. There is a provision that if the number of votes cast is less than 10 percent, the deposit amount will be deposited in the state treasury.

The 516 candidates who managed to save their deposit (who receive more than 10 percent votes) will have to apply to the Election Commission within 90 days of the publication of the final election results to get their deposit back. The Commission has stated that they will get their money back after submitting the application in a proper manner.

The deposits of UML, Congress and NCP candidates have also been forfeited in Kathmandu. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) won in all 10 constituencies in Kathmandu.

In the 2079 BS elections, the deposit of only one candidate from UML, Congress and Unified Socialist Party was forfeited. Similarly, the bail of 2 Maoists and 38 Janamat Party candidates was forfeited. The bail of 82 candidates of the National Independent Party was forfeited. The bail of 114 candidates of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, 43 candidates of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, 62 candidates of the Janata Samajwadi Party and 20 candidates of the Nagarik Unmukti Party was forfeited.
