Nepali Congress candidate Santosh Subba has paved the way for the federal parliament by being elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Tehrathum. While the election storm of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party has swept away veteran leaders, he has maintained the respect of the Congress in Koshi Province.
He was defeated by UML's Kishore Chandra Dulal by a narrow margin in the 2079 provincial assembly in Tehrathum 1 (1). He has paved the way for the federal parliament for the first time by defeating UML Secretary Bhanubhakta Dhakal in the House of Representatives election.
Subba got 11,561 votes while Dhakal got 10,682 votes. This time, Surendra Karki of the National Independent Party secured the third place with 7,737 votes.
Subindra Kumar Limbu of the Shram Sanskriti Party came fourth with 5,200 votes. In the 2079 House of Representatives election, Congress's Sita Gurung won from this constituency. Before that, this constituency was considered the 'red fort' of UML. Congress was only a strong competitor. Since 2079, Congress has succeeded in demolishing this fort of UML.
UML Secretary Dhakal had entered the electoral fray from his home district of Tehrathum with the aim of making a political comeback. However, Subba foiled his plan.
Dhakal, who became an MP from the proportional representation system in the second Constituent Assembly election of 2070, was elected from Morang-3 in the 2074 House of Representatives election and also became a minister. However, in the 2079 election, he was defeated by Congress' Dr. Sunil Sharma in Morang-3 by a margin of more than 22,000 votes. This time, Dhakal, who had climbed the hill, was defeated by Subba.
48-year-old Subba has been active in politics for about three decades. He has been an active member of the Nepali Congress since 2052. Before entering politics, he was active in social activities. The rise of the people's movement in 2062/63 opened his political consciousness and increased his activism.
Subba initially joined the Nepal Tarun Dal, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress. He led it for two terms. Then, he finally merged with the mainstream of the party and became the elected treasurer of the Nepali Congress in Tehrathum.
