Congress candidate Santosh Subba has paved the way for the federal parliament by being elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Tehrathum. While the election storm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has been raising veteran leaders, Subba has saved the prestige of the Congress by registering a victory from Koshi Province.
In the 2079 State Assembly, he narrowly defeated UML's Kishore Chandra Dulal in Tehrathum 1 (1). He made his first trip to the federal parliament by defeating UML Secretary Bhanubhakta Dhakal in the House of Representatives election.
Subba received 11,561 votes while Dhakal received 10,682 votes. Surendra Karki of the National Independent Party secured third place with 7,737 votes.
Subindra Kumar Limbu of the Shram Sanskriti Party came fourth with 5,200 votes. In the 2079 House of Representatives election, Sita Gurung of the Nepali Congress had won from the same constituency. Before that, this constituency was considered the 'Red Fort' of UML. The Congress was the only strong competitor. Since 2079, the Congress has succeeded in demolishing this UML stronghold.
UML Secretary Dhakal had entered the election fray from his home district of Tehrathum with the aim of making a political comeback. However, Subba foiled his plan.
Dhakal, who became an MP from the proportional representation system in the second Constituent Assembly election of 2070, was elected from Morang-3 in the House of Representatives election of 2074 and also became a minister. However, in the 2079 election, he was defeated by Dr. Sunil Sharma of the Nepali Congress by a margin of more than 22,000 votes. Leaving the area of strong competitor Sharma and climbing the hill, he was defeated there too. This time, Dr. Sharma was defeated by Ganesh Karki of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Morang-3.
The 48-year-old newly elected Subba has been active in politics for about three decades. He has been an active member of the Nepali Congress since 2052. Before entering politics, he was active in social activities. The rise of the people's movement in 2062/63 opened his political consciousness and increased his activism.
Subba initially joined the Nepal Tarun Dal, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress. He led it for two terms. Then, finally merging with the mainstream of the party, he became the elected treasurer of the Nepali Congress Tehrathum.
Based on his organizational ability and activism, he was elected as the district secretary from the 13th General Convention of the Nepali Congress. Then, he was elected as a general convention representative in the 14th General Convention. This time, he will be one of the few Congress MPs in the House of Representatives.
