UML's 63-year-old Laxmi Prasad Pokharel has set his second journey to parliament. Pokharel, who has been contesting the Pradhan Panch election since 2043 BS, was elected from Dailekh-2 in the vote count made public on Saturday. Pokharel won by securing 13,889 votes.
His closest competitor, Dikpal Kumar Shahi of Nepali Congress, got 9,552 votes. Pokharel was defeated by Yini Shahi of Nepali Congress in 2079 BS.
Pokharel has contested elections for the 8th time, from Pradhan Panch to member of the House of Representatives. Pokharel had previously been a member of the Nepali Congress, the Nepali Congress, the Nepali Congress, and the Nepali Muslim League. Active in student politics since 2035 BS, he became the founding president of the Nepali Congress student organization, the Nepali Congress Student Union, at Vijaya Secondary School, Dailekh.
He was arrested for campaigning for a multi-party system in the 2036 referendum.
He spent 2 months in jail while protesting against the Panchayat in 2042. Pokharel worked as a teacher at Nepal National Secondary School Riju from 2041 to 2043. After leaving his teaching job, he was elected as the Pradhan Panchayat of the then Push Village Panchayat in 2043.
Under his leadership, a movement to prohibit alcohol was held in the district in 2045. Pokharel, who was the coordinator of Dailekh district in the 2046 United People's Movement, was arrested on Falgun 3 and was released from jail only after the ban on multi-party systems was lifted on Chaitra 26, 2046.
A member of the district committee of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) since 2042, he was elected as a central member at the first central general convention held in Butwal in 2048. He became the VDC chairman in 2049 and contested as a ward member in 2054. Until then, he was in Nemkima and later joined UML in 2054.
In 2055, he contested as a member of the District Development Committee from ML and was defeated by UML's Bhadra Bhandari. In 2056, he became a candidate for the House of Representatives from ML, but his bail was forfeited. In 2058, he returned to UML along with Bamdev and became the district member of UML Dailekh and became the deputy secretary of UML's district committee from 2063 to 2066.
Pokharel, who was also a member of UML's Politburo, was elected as the second member of the Constituent Assembly in 2070. He won with 15,619 votes, while Him Bahadur Shahi of Nepali Congress got 13,096 votes.
Born on 13 Asad 2019 BS, he is a resident of Chhiudipusakot, Dullu Municipality-5, Dailekh. He has four sons. Pokharel has studied up to the bachelor's level in humanities.
