Rabi Lamichhane, the central president of the National Independent Party (NISP), registered his candidacy for the post of member of the House of Representatives from Chitwan-2 through Wares on Tuesday.

His candidacy was registered through his will, said Chitwan-2 Assistant Election Officer Deviram Bhandari. Due to the cooperative fraud case pending in the Parsa District Court, it was not possible for him to come to the Election Officer's office on Tuesday.

He was elected as an MP from this constituency for the first time in the 2079 BS election. Lamichhane was the candidate and won when the by-election was held in this constituency. This is Lamichhane's third candidacy from Chitwan-2 in a span of three years.

Lamichhane won the 2079 BS election by getting 49,300 votes. His nearest rival, Congress' Umesh Shrestha, got 14,988 votes, and Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, who came in third, got 14,652 votes. Lamichhane also became the Home Minister after being elected.

The Supreme Court had revoked Lamichhane's MP status in Magh 2079 BS, holding that he had not completed the process when he renounced his US citizenship and re-acquired Nepali citizenship. Then, a by-election was held in Chitwan-2. After completing the process and obtaining citizenship, Lamichhane became the candidate in the by-election as well.

Lamichhane won the by-election held in Baisakh 2080 by-election with 54,176 votes. His closest competitor, Jeet Narayan Shrestha of the Nepali Congress, got 11,214 votes, and Ram Prasad Neupane of the UML, who came in third, got 10,936 votes. Then, on Poush 2081,  Lamichhane's position was suspended after a case of cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering was registered.

The Attorney General's Office has recently given permission to the government attorney's office of the concerned district to withdraw the organized crime and money laundering charges against Lamichhane. A writ petition has also been filed in the Supreme Court against this.
