Renu Dahal is set to resign from the post of mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City on Tuesday to run for the House of Representatives seat in Chitwan-3.
In a press conference attended by Deputy Mayor Chitrasen Adhikari, Mayor Dahal announced her resignation from the post of mayor on Tuesday after holding an executive meeting.
Dahal won the 2074 BS and 2079 BS local level elections in alliance with the Congress. Dahal, who was the then candidate of the Maoist Center, was elected deputy mayor of Bharatpur both times from the Congress when she was mayor.
The Nepali Communist Party (NCP), formed by the merger of the Maoist Center, the CPN-S and other parties, is making Renu a candidate in Chitwan-3. This time, she is contesting the elections without any alliance.
'While resigning from the post of mayor, it is as if she is leaving home. But the constitution does not allow her to work in the metropolis all the time. She has to serve the people. For this, she had to stand up after the elections because she had not done anything other than politics,' Dahal said.
She said that she was forced to leave the mayor's post more out of necessity than desire due to the country's situation as the 2084 elections were to be held in 82. She said that she was not used to being nervous when she stood for election due to her experience of being a member of the Constituent Assembly through proportional representation for the first time, competing with heavyweight candidate Prakash Man Singh in Kathmandu during the second election for the Constituent Assembly member, and having made various laws and procedures as mayor.
'I hear people talking about Renu being good at development but not good at policy making. I became a member of the Constituent Assembly. She made laws and procedures as mayor. Renu Dahal is also good at making laws,' she said.
She said that she responded to the comment that she was the daughter of former Prime Minister and NCP coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal through her work. 'She stood for election as Prachanda's daughter. Many underestimated what this little girl would do. This also made me feel like I have to show my work. I am now going to the elections with a photo and certificate of everything I did when I was mayor twice,' Dahal said. She said that the country needs honest people's representatives and she will fulfill that. 'Some say elect those who know, I say elect those who do. The voters here will take note of this,' Dahal said.
Chitwan-3, where Dahal is going to stand, includes the western part of Bharatpur Metropolitan City and Madi Municipality. Chitwan, which has three constituencies, has the largest number of voters. When Bikram Pandey of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) won the 2079 House of Representatives from here, the then Maoist Center candidate was the closest competitor.
The National Independent Party (RIP) received the most votes in the proportional representation, while the Maoists were in third place. Here, the RPP is again fielding Bikram Pandey as its candidate. Sovita Gautam is set to contest from the RIP. UML is fielding Shankar Thapaliya as its candidate. The Congress has not finalized the name of the candidate.
