Baburam Bhattarai, who has announced that he will not contest the upcoming House of Representatives elections, is set to become a direct candidate from Gorkha Constituency No. 2. Bhattarai is set to become a candidate from the Progressive Democratic Party (Pralopa).

Pralopa district leader Yan Prasad Bhatta said that the decision to field Bhattarai from Gorkha-2 was made by the decision of the leading cadres' meeting. 

Source: Bhattarai, who participated in the leading cadres' meeting on Sunday, was pressured by the cadres to become a candidate. 'He was not willing to become a candidate, we cadres put a lot of pressure on him, some friends even said that if he did not become a candidate, he would not be able to stay in the organization,' said a cadre who participated in the meeting, 'It has been decided to field him after a lot of pressure.' Bhatta informed that the candidate for Gorkha-1 will be decided soon.

Bhattarai was also elected from Gorkha-2 in the 2064 Constituent Assembly election and from Gorkha-1 in 2070. Bhattarai, who won Gorkha-2 in 2074 BS in an alliance with the Nepali Congress, supported CPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in 2079 BS.
