Komal Gyawali, who entered politics from the business world of Kathmandu and Kailali, has won a landslide victory from Kailali-1 in her first attempt in the parliamentary election.
She entered the election field carrying the flag of alternative politics from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Gyawali won by securing 17,826 votes, while her rival Janakraj Chaudhary secured 12,867 votes.
Similarly, Ramlal Dangaura, who resigned from the post of mayor of Tikapur Municipality and became the candidate of the NCP, secured 8,392 votes. UML candidate Dwarika Prasad Neupane secured 4,493 votes. There are a total of 107,757 voters in this constituency, and 51,061 votes were cast.
When the election was announced, it was not easy for Komal. The ticket given to Gyawali by the center amid the claims of the old and organization-building engineer Prakash Bista within the party had caused a huge upheaval within the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Opposition from the party's own leaders and activists was a big challenge for her. However, Gyawali finally succeeded in winning the hearts of the voters by overcoming all those dissatisfactions and internal conflicts with efficiency and a clear agenda.
Born in Tikapur, Kailali in 2035, Komal's educational and professional background became a key link in her victory. A graduate in management, she had been running an agricultural machinery and seed business for 5 years. Her approach of considering politics as service and profession as self-reliance attracted voters. She had learned her initial lessons in politics as the founding central treasurer of the Nagarik Unmukti Party and had joined the RSSW along with Laxman Chaudhary.
His commitment to zero-corruption administration at every door became the main weapon to attract young and conscious voters. His plan to create employment by linking agriculture and Tharu culture raised hopes among the locals.
She also skillfully used the craze for senior leader Balen Shah and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) President Ravi Lamichhane and the trust in the new power to her advantage.
Kailali-1 is considered the center of Tharu majority and identity politics. After being elected from here, Gyawali has both challenges and opportunities. On the one hand, he has to promote cultural tourism and agro-processing and industry in his area, and on the other hand, he has to raise the anti-corruption campaign raised by the party in a strong manner in parliament. At the same time, the issue of Tharu culture and identity of Kailali-1 will also have to be strengthened.
Gyawali has explained her victory as a strong desire for change among the people of the region rather than a personal success. After the election results, she said that this victory is a result of the hope and trust of the common people.
She has taken some internal differences seen within the party in the initial phase of the election with ease. Although there was some hesitation among local workers due to the candidacy of Engineer Prakash Bista, she said that it was resolved through dialogue with the local team, considering it a ‘mis-understanding’.
By being directly elected, she has also challenged the traditional notion that women are only for proportional quota. Giving self-confidence to women who want to enter politics, she said, ‘We are not weak, if we move forward with hard work and dedication, achieving our goals is possible.’ She has also thanked party President Ravi Lamichhane and the central leadership for putting her in the election fray with faith.
