More than half a dozen former finance ministers who have previously handled the economy's treasury are also competing in the upcoming House of Representatives elections.
Baburam Bhattarai, who previously served as Finance Minister and Prime Minister, Bishnu Poudel, who has served as Finance Minister five times, Barshaman Pun and Janardan Sharma, who have served as Finance Ministers twice, Prakash Sharan Mahat and Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, who have served as Finance Ministers once each, and half a dozen former Finance Ministers are contesting the February 21 election. These former Finance Ministers have said that they have registered their candidacies from their respective constituencies, making their experience in formulating the country's economic policy a major agenda among voters.
Former Prime Minister and Finance Minister Baburam Bhattarai, who had earlier announced that he would not contest the election, has filed his candidacy from Gorkha-2 from the Progressive Democratic Party. This is his old constituency. In the previous election, he had left his constituency for the then Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. This time, he himself has filed his candidacy for a member of the House of Representatives. When he was Finance Minister, Bhattarai had done remarkable work, especially in revenue collection.
Former Finance Minister Barshaman Pun has also registered his candidacy from Rolpa. In the 2074 BS representative and provincial assembly elections, the Maoist Center contested in alliance with the UML and in 2079 BS with the Congress. Pun won again from both alliances. In 2079 BS, Pun won by securing 41,714 votes in alliance with the Congress. His competitor, Purna Budhamagar of the UML, got 16,485 votes. After the constituency restructuring in 2073 BS, Rolpa became the only constituency. Since then, Pun has been getting elected. Former Finance Minister Pun has registered his candidacy from Rolpa from the NCP this time too. Pun had become the Finance Minister twice when Baburam Bhattarai and Pushpa Kamal Dahal were the Prime Ministers.
Another former Finance Minister, Janardan Sharma, has registered his candidacy from Rukum West on behalf of the Progressive Democratic Party. Sharma, who broke away from the then Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has been elected four times from Rukum West. He also became controversial after questions were raised about the budget preparation process while he was the Finance Minister. Sharma became the Finance Minister twice after becoming the Energy Minister.
Similarly, former Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel has registered his candidacy from Rupandehi-2. Although he was preparing to file his candidacy from Palpa-2 until a few days ago, he finally filed his candidacy from Rupandehi-2. Poudel has won four consecutive elections from Rupandehi-2 from UML. Poudel was elected from the same constituency in 2064, 2070, 2074 and 2079. He has also registered his candidacy from the same constituency now.
Poudel has been the Finance Minister five times. He is known as a private sector-friendly Finance Minister.
Election Officer Rajendra Neupane said that 24 people have registered their candidacies for Rupandehi-2 so far, including Chunna Prasad Poudel from the Congress, Subash Pandey from the Nepali Communist Party, Karbika Thapa from the RPP, and Narayan Nagila from the Pralopa.
Nepali Congress leader and former Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat has also filed his candidacy from Nuwakot-1. He was the Finance Minister in the government formed by the alliance of the Maoist Center and the Congress. At that time, he became an MP from the proportional list.
Congress leader Gyanendra Bahadur Karki has registered his candidacy in Sunsari-4. He reached the office of the Election Officer on Tuesday and registered his candidacy. Karki had previously won from the same constituency in the 2079 election. Karki, who was also the Finance Minister and Minister of Communications, had won by defeating UML candidate Jagdish Prasad Kusiyait.
Similarly, former Finance Minister Surendra Pandey, despite being a candidate for the election, was not able to compete in the upcoming elections after not getting a ticket from UML. Earlier, in the 2079 elections, Pandey lost to Hari Dhakal of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from Chitwan Constituency-1.
