Social media platform 'Discord', which is popular especially for those who play video and online games, has become popular for different reasons after joining Nepal's Gen-G movement last week.

The government collapsed on the second day of the Zen-G movement by making a plan through Discord. On the fifth day, the Prime Minister was appointed by Jen-Ji's choice, and the House of Representatives was dissolved.

The anti-corruption campaign that started after the then KP Sharma Oli-led government decided to shut down social media was turned into the Gen-G movement. But just like the movement of the youth who carried flowers from home in a peaceful demonstration was infiltrated, the open communities of WhatsApp and Discord were also unable to handle the moderators.

Moderators repeatedly asked not to make provocative expressions that spread violence. After it became too much, the members were sometimes stopped from speaking and writing comments on the platform.  The

discord was full of extremely personal insults, threats of assault, one chaotic comment after another. Therefore, this platform also became the means of such a huge loss in the second day's performance.

Jen-G has been praised by many for running a democratic and transparent practice through a platform like Discord. Many people in the world have watched it with interest since the head of the government is chosen through Discord's live debates and voting. Unbeknownst to most of Nepal until Monday morning, Discord became the most downloaded platform by the weekend.

also became a means for more than one and a half million people to directly participate in the discussion in a single forum. These debates, which were live on YouTube, Tik Tok and even on Facebook, were different from the classroom discussions and consensus held in previous protests. Seeing that technologies such as Discord were used during the management and completion of the Gen-G movement, many have called it a 'digital revolution'.

Journalist and analyst Jeremy Dicker of Diplomat magazine wrote in X, "Discord was one of the 26 apps banned by the government at that time, Nepali people have chosen their interim leader using it and Sushila Karki has now reached the executive position." Organized through Discord chats, teenagers became active in both online and virtual movements. Discord played an important role in representing Jen-G's sound.

discord has also become a medium for spreading false and misleading information and spreading chaos. One of the participants wrote on Discord's 'Youth Against Corruption' server, 'Let's destroy the airport runway and burn all the planes', while another incited, 'If you have a gun, take it near the airport and burn it.' A participant named Vikas wrote that 'if you have a drone, take it near the airport and start flying'. Similarly, a user named Chill Gai made a sarcastic comment saying 'All the leaders are killed'. A user named Bose tried to handle that 'let's attack only the personal property of the leaders, not burn the public property'.

In the Discord discussion, there were reactions to incite violence such as the disclosure of the address of the daughter of the Chief District Officer of Kathmandu in the US and the targeting of a leader for the death of a youth. Even though some foreign media have propagated that such discontent started with the decision to ban social media on August 19, Arpan Bista, a participant in the Discord discussion as a listener and voter, says that this is not the case. "In the beginning, there were not thousands of participants like now, only one/two hundred would gather," he says.

Discord is a free communication platform. It allows users to join different communities, chat and share content. It can share text, audio, video and screen. It allows you to create a 'server' or join a server. A server is like a virtual community, where you can create different voice and chat channels. The server named 'Youth Against Corruption', which became the most popular during the Gen-G movement, currently has 162,000 members. This server is operated by Sudan Gurung's group from an NGO called 'Hami Nepali'.

Discord was used not only in Nepal, but also in Iran's month-long protests, Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests, and political protests in Serbia and the United States. Platforms like WhatsApp and Tiktok have been used extensively in previous protests in Nepal, but Discord is new. It has the facility to connect a large group of up to 5 lakh at a time, to create different channels for different topics within the same server, to discuss and respond through real-time text, audio and video. This is why Discord is a good medium for movement.

' is relatively safe and decentralized on that. Supriya, one of the members of the group, said that it can be easily used in Nepal because it is difficult to censor than the mainstream social networks.

The 'Youth Against Corruption' server was used for demonstration planning, coordination, updating information, voting on who will be the interim government head, fact-checking, blood donation, rescue. In this, stage-1 and stage-2 were conducted for overall conversation, while a dozen Push to Talk (PTT) group chat channels were created. A PTT cannot have more than 20 members. This server had the facility of polling and feedback for candidate selection and decision.

At a time when traditional institutions are in disarray and social networks are struggling to operate, the server itself has become a makeshift parliament. The moderators, who were also students, proceeded with the process of electing the interim leadership through debate and voting. Among the names in the news were former Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising to Dharan Mayor Hark Sampang, youth leader Sagar Dhakal, social entrepreneur Mahaveer Pun. However, in the end, the consensus reached on former Chief Justice Sushila Karki.

During a discussion on Discord, Yuva claimed that Karki was ready to take the responsibility only if many of them supported him. Following the demand of the majority of the youth, Karki met President Ramchandra Paudel and Chief of Army Staff Ashokraj Sigdel and indicated that she is ready to take the interim leadership. Karki was appointed as interim Prime Minister on Friday night. His rise is seen as a new generation initiative in Nepali politics and a rare moment of unity through digital means. Launched in 2015 by Jason Citron and Stan Wisniewski, Discord was originally aimed at gamers. In recent years, it has become a community oriented platform. By 2025, it has more than 689 million users and 259 million monthly active users. According to the company, there are many users between the ages of 18 and 34.

After the government banned some social networking platforms, not only Discord, but also BitChat, which can exchange messages via Bluetooth, and the use of VPN to run social networks were banned. Proton VPN has told various international media that the VPN downloads have increased by 6000 percent only on 19 August when social media was banned in Nepal (September 4).
